Forums - Sales - What is EA doing wrong?

^ that was prety close to what really happened. The 2mln sales Shio bragged were on hype alone, like Assassins Creed. I mean, Minesweep seems like a deep and adult game close to Spore.

They started investing in tons of new and big budget IPs that not all worked out untill this point like Mirrors Edge and and Dead Space. IMO they have a good shot at posting a profit this year with some good hits, so it would be great. Also there are plenty of new, potential blockbuster games that still havent hit shelves

@ Shio. I don't know about WarHAmmer, but I wont sit tigh and watch someone saying Spore was a success in my watch. That DRM PoS was my biggest disapointment in gamming in a long time. I'm still hoping they come out and say "Kidding, here's the real deal". EDIT: Just to clarify my point, if they made a half decent game instead of that turd, they would be sitting in a new awesome Franchise, plus innovating the industry and maybe revitalizing PC gaming in the eyes of the gamming community, that despite PC excellent offering, now considers pc gaming sceond rate to console gamming(when I say now, I mean since mid 2000's, when PS2 became mainstream)

Anything to back that up, because Console gaming was already mainstream way before PC ever was.

Well, there´s a period when Pc gaming was the great stuff, getting great game like Doom, Quake, Starcraft, Civ, Simcity, AoE1 and 2, Diablo, Baldurs Gate, FAllout, Half-Life, etc. People were actually proud of PC gaming. Now they do it, but don´t talk much about it, the great subject being what is the next great FPS on X360/PS3. What I mean is, there was a Golden age of PC gaming.

PC gaming only reached mainstream in late 90's, less than 15 years ago, when games like Half-Life, Starcraft, UT and AOE2 poured in. PC gaming is healthier than ever, with over 300 millions PC gamers proving so.

Right now, there are more developers working on PC games than in all Consoles combined, there are more PC gamers than Console gamers, and recently many analysts are saying that PC gaming will disrupt console gaming.

EA is a terrible company that buys out small successful developers. Yes they have gotten better, but they still suck.

So does Activision.

Could you please provide sources for all of the radical things you say? We're not going to believe you otherwise.

Spore sold pretty well (2 million in 3 weeks), the DRM may have hampered it a bit but it still sold very solidly, at least initially. No idea hows its done since then though. I very much doubt spore has much to do with the poor financial situation EA is in.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/age-of-conan-turns-corner-says-funcom

"In Funcom's latest financial report, there's some encouraging news regarding the performance of its troubled MMO Age of Conan - although nothing as concrete as subscriber numbers.

The report for the first quarter of 2009 says that the fantasy MMO's subscriber retention has improved and "a significant increase in new customers in Q1 compared to Q4 has led to a stable and solid subscriber base". Players are spending longer in the game on average, too.

The company reported earnings of USD 7.7m, largely from Age of Conan subscriptions. That's actually a dip from the USD 8.7m it made in the last quarter of 2008. But the painful USD 23m losses of that period have been replaced by a modest USD 1.5m operating profit."

See that line right there? That line proves me right. They are not gaining significant long term subscribers, or are gaining them at the same rate they are losing em. That is death to a MMO. A short term burst in revenue will not keep the game from dying. MMOs live and die based on subscription numbers, and when you lose a huge amount then your game is done. The MMO crowd has a long memory, and little forgiveness.

Spore couldn't have costed EA that much money, considering it had crappy graphics and a cartoonish design. Even Sims 3 has almost identical graphics to the second one, just a little better.
