Because something that's official can't just be made by any person out of the blue.
Yeah but its kind of unfair since you get VGC$ on threads you create that get a lot of replies. I created an official for a new game an it was closed so a mod could recreate it. Stupid if you ask me.

I dislike it because it limits discussion. When a thread grows to a certain size, new people stop checking it. You end up with the same 5-10 people posting in it over and over.
Instead of one big "XYZ" thread, I'd rather 5 "XYZ" threads. The website is more active that way and it's friendlier/less intimidating to people who want to jump into the conversation.

Why not? I'm not trying to be sarcastic or whatever, I'm genuinely curious. On another forum I frequent anyone can make an official thread and the community is generally....errr, hopefully smart enough to post all comments about a game in it's official thread. Every now and again you get an official thread on game X and someone makes another thread about game X, but its usually locked within an hour of it's creation.

Because "Official" suggests it's actually an official VGC thread, and thus needs to be approved by a member of staff.
It's really not difficult, there are some 20 moderators. Send one of the online ones a wall post: "Hey, can I make an Official Thread for X game?". They'll usually say yes, unless the game releses in six years or something, and then ask them to sticky it afterwards.
Yeah, just ask a mod. Twesterm approved my L4d2 thread

It's in the rules, before creating an official thread you have to ask. It's not like they're gonna say no. The only time I created an official thread (the Killzone 2 one) I asked and got the answer in a min. It's not that much of a hassle
To quote the rules:
"Do not simply declare your thread official by fiat. Threads are only "official" or "perpetual" if management says so."
