Taiwan OEMs recently have placed significant orders for key Sony PS3 components from IC distributors, with average monthly volume enough for making one million units of the games console in the third quarter, double the average in the second quarter, according to sources with IC distributors.

The sources estimated the growth momentum will remain strong through October thanks to the year-end holiday demand.

PS3's chipset is provided by Renesas Technology, and supply is falling short of the strong demand currently, the sources noted.

Sales of time division synchronizers used in PS3 have also increased, and shipments are expected to top four million units per month in the third quarter, added the sources.

4million a month in the third quarter?

Wow, lots of sales inbound.

Sounds like Sony is ramping up for 4th quarter sales... it takes time to get the units onto store shelves after they're built.

As far as the time division synchronizers are concerned, either there are many of them in each PS3, or that component is used in many other devices. 4 million PS3s made/sold per month just isn't a realistic possibility, even if they drop the price to $299.

Guys, read properly:

"with average monthly volume enough for making one million units of the games console in the third quarter"

Anyway:

0.5 million per month in the second quarter (1.5 million total)
1 million per month in the third quarter (3 million total)

That leaves 8.5 million to attain the 13 million forecast... I think they'll miss that by around 4 million.

That's what I get for relying on someone else's interpretation of the article instead of reading it myself.  Lesson learned.

Plus the ones they make in October, and maybe some of the ones they make in November.

I'm guessing XDR and perhaps some of the plastic in the system??
