Forums - Gaming - Am I the only one who thinks $400 is still expensive?

darconi said: By the numbers above, even at the reduced $400 price, that means its still almost 2x the rate of inflation which is very significant. A lot of people really are losing perspective on videogame consoles because they've gotten used to the idea of $400 and $600 consoles. The only consoles that have been priced this high have been ones that failed miserably. They are not the mass market price and won't be for a long time until inflation finally catches up in another 10 years or so. The wii hit it right with the pricepoint. If you desperately want bleeding edge technology, thats what the computer market is for.

You fucking win... er, frickin win!

Thats the main thing I was getting at; how can people call $400 "cheap" "mainstream" ect. is because they have lost all sense of what a reasonable price is thanks to the excessive cost of the PS3 and 360.

@Leo-j; what 4 PS3 games did you buy at launch? RFOM was the only good, original launch title.

I bought my ps3 for $1200.00

In gamestop. Came with 4 games. And an extra controller.

Naw I dont think $399.99 is expensive for a

bluray player, 1080p HD dvd upscaler, playstation 1, playstation 3, online gaming, and multi media functionality.

$399.99 is too cheap for all of that.

So how do you know how much is too expensive Leo-J?

You don't even know how much it costs to put food in your belly or a roof over your head.

Dont be a freakin adult bossing me around. I know exatcly how much it costs. Food stamps come from me(money from government for food) , an I make 200 buks a week. Dont give me no $hit like that. For all of those features 400 dollars is not expensive.

mM

In the realm of the everyday person $400 is a lot. In the realm of "technology people" its moderatley expensive.

I think the best answer for this is look at $400 not as buying PS3 or XBOX or anything. Imagine you are giving a loved one a $400 gift........how many people would you spend $400 on.

IMO for the middle class person $400 for a gift is a lot. As I said $400 for a technology guy $400 is still quite a bit, not as much as a pc gaming rig or a LCD screen.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

It depends on how much value you assign to those features.

If you only own an HD set, the virtues of BD and HD scaling are meaningless. If you already have a media center PC and upscaling DVD player, those PS3 features are meaningless. If you only want to play games, all those features are meaningless.

Leo-J on this odd occasion is actually right. The 40GB is not to expensive for what you get, it's just too expensive for the mainstream gamer.

My fears have subsided. I was just tired of the flame wars the past day or so, I hope you can understand my intention.

OT: As ArtofAngels said, it's not a matter of being able to afford the PS3, it's all about value. The PS3 is supposed to be, first and foremost, a games machine. The current offering is scant, and not worth the money they are asking for.

Now, if Team Ico (), MGS4, FFXIII, and Killzone 2 were dropping this holiday season, $400 would be closer to the value I'd place on it, but I'd still prefer it drop into the sub 300 category before I made the jump.

What are you 16? How would my mom afford that?  I aint rich.. it was my dad :P

XD Good old daddy, always there to give money... Too bad mine is a cheapass.

But for me who doesn't work (not that I don't want to, I have some personal issues), I can't afford it and to tell the truth I'd rather spend it on something else like tons of clothing, new hairstyle and such (and maybe some lingerie to please my bf's eyes). Makes more people happy and imo, I get more (personal) value for the price.

Sure it's not that expansive considering what it does but it is for the average Joe that doesn't spend all his money into gaming.

Trust me, if you're basically supporting yourself, plus paying part of your college tuition, $400 is a helluva lot. I've had to work hard for every game/console I've ever owned, the last videogame oriented thing I got as a gift was a gameboy pocket :p

One important point -- $400 > $300.

Why do I mention that? Because Sony sold a lot of PS2s (esp. in Japan) by being the least expensive DVD player.

However, since Blu Ray units are already now starting at $300, it can't depend on that same market for the PS3.

What are, you 12? Profanity is part of our vocabulary; we're going to use it when we feel particulary strong about something, or at least want to convey the sense that we feel strongly about something. Thanks, Mr.Mom.

That being said, let me ammend my first statement: What are you, fucking 12?

But yeah, to the OP, $400 is still quite a pricetag. Especially since it's not so much a price cut as much as a stripping of hardware and then paying for what we get.

Actually, cursing shows one of two things. Either you feel particularly strong about something, or you lack the vocabulary to properly express your feelings. 12 year olds are usually the ones who will throw it around quite freely. Nice try though. And you spell amend with one m, not two. Are you 12?

I know sinear is free to express himself with curse words, I just thought it wasn't needed in this instance, and likely to rile up some fanboys.

I never claimed that expressing emotion was the exclusive effect of swearwords; If we're going to be technical I'm sure there's no limit to "how many things" you could be expressing by using profanity; anyway, it's certainly not two. And please, don't condescend and assume I don't know how to spell amend; I don't pay all that much attention to typos when I post on message board posts, to be honest. So have fun being the moral adjudicator on an internet message board while you correct minor grammatical errors and work your way to 3,000 posts; I'm going to go do something worthwhile.
