Microsoft has been making steady progress since they joined in the console race. Why would they just up and leave?

Well I just don't see Microsoft staying in the gaming area permanently...They are makin good profit elsewhere.. Windows, Zune..etc.

Don't really know how to explain it, but seeing how original xbox did and xbox 360 does leads me to the thought that they won't stay more than 2-3 gens.

No, Microsoft has had a 1 year lead but if you look at the first 2 years of each of PS3 and 360's sales ps3 is leading. so even though microsoft is selling their stuff for very cheap and sonys is very expensive, sony are acctually winning over microsoft. Also because PS3 offered a BRAND NEW type of gaming (bluray) and has massive library of games from 3rd and 1st party devs.
