Forums - Nintendo - How "hardcore" were the N64 and Gamecube?

I don't think the Ps1 is seen as being more hardcore than the N64 was, though perhaps at the time. I think the PS2 is perceived as being more hardcore than the GC. Just the impression i get.

You're forgetting that ps1 had FF7

You're forgetting that many of the existing fans of Final Fantasy saw Final Fantasy 7 as a "bastardization" of the series to appeal to a wider audience.

I see what you did there.

FF7 is not a microcosm.

FF7 was simply a change. FF7 wasn't meant to appeal to a wider audience, it was just an original game that deviated from the endless fantasy settings of past FF's. Seriously man, it was a never ending stream of castles, caves, and the elements. I also don't see how anyone could call FF7 more or less casual than any other FF game. They are all basically the same except for the setting, story, and leveling system.

Ok then. Todays Wii casual gamers are tomorrows' Wii "hardcore" players. I really don't like the terms "casual" and "hardcore" gamers anyway.

If that's your prediction, I hope it comes true. That is, I hope Nintendo is able to provide the kind of experiences that will keep the transitioning casual gamers on the platform. The core will probably still be casual gamers though.

How exactly did it deviate setting-wise?  Pretty much all the settings from technologically sophisticated city to dank cave were present in both FF6 and FF7.  I can see someone making the argument that FF6 deviated from the FF4 and FF5 settings and that FF7 continued in that direction, but saying that FF7 deviated from all the rest is silly.

Hardcore enough to get some downright excellent exclsuives that are still very much adored today...

I am trying -- and failing -- to think of third-party exclusives that fit that definition.

Mike from Morgantown

Rare was third-party, right?

...

hmm, well just enjoy the games you have. after all, to each his own

Yes i think that's what Nintendo's plan is. I don't think Nintendo's offerings have become any more casual since the days of the N64 and GC. They are still in the business of entertainment and the only difference is in the way the games are played. Some gamers will game in a casual manner whilst some will game in a "hardcore" manner. As Malstrom would say, Nintendo gamers will move "upstream". The gamers that game the most, as you said will be the "hardcore" ones. Judging by the sales of MKWii i would say there are quite a few "hardcore" players.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

Did anyone even use the terms Hardcore and Caual before this generation?

Casual games wasn't a problem then since most of those games were on their "choice" of console.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

You are right. It was more of an evolution. ff6 was similar to ff7. In that vain though I wonder if people also complained about 6 deviating from past ff's..

I knew I should have just included ff6 in my original argument.

You'd probably have to ask some Japanese gamers.  The west went from 1 to 4 to 6 so every game was different than the last for us.
