Why?

It's one of the highest selling games this gen.

With popularity comes jealously from rival fanboys.

You know, every man and his dog seems to have played Halo in some way shape or form (PC, XBOX, XBOX 360)

But.

It's mostly those who don't own a 360 who claim it's crap.

Popularity, as many have said by now. With popularity shall draw detractors, especially among people who like to consider themselves better than the unwashed masses, such as you find all over the internet.

I just thought it was way over hyped for what it was. The online is full of screming kids and imo Halo 2 was much, much better.

Kinda like how i have hate for GTA4, apart from the screaming kids... the online is just bad on that.

Because it's not made by Sega thus making me hate it! (Nah I don't Halo except 2,(CURSE YOU TERRIBLE HUMAN PISTOL OF HALO 2!!!) the games are fun but they are overrated.)

Highest selling= Tonnes of people played it, sure, high sales don't gaurantee a good game (but it does happen to be a quality game IMO), but i stick to what i said.......................

Most of Halo's haters don't even own a 360.
