Hey - here's the quote.
One of the games that comes to mind is "Left 4 Dead 2." Though the game isn't out yet, it's already causing an uproar. Set in New Orleans, players will have to fight their way through hordes of zombies - with several of them who appear to be African-Americans. When I saw the first trailer for the game, all I could think about was Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath. Setting the game in a city that was scene of dead, bloated bodies floating by so soon afterward was a bad call, IMHO. The city has had enough to deal with -- Valve, you should have spared them, even if it's just a video game.
The paragraph before that - racial undertones appearing in games - is about a trend that could be perceived.
Look at my quote - I said the zombies appeared to be black. I stated - right there - I was talking about Hurricane Katrina and the graphic images from that event, which, if you remember, showed mainly blacks, as they were the ones who weren't able to leave the city before the storm hit. That is what I was saying. Where in my post did I come out and even strongly hint the game was racist? Can it be perceived as such? Definitely. Think about RE5 when the game came out. Did it or did it not spark racism talk?
No, this entire event was due to a person who phailed at reading comprehension making a big event out of nothing. Nothing. It's just another post - and just like the rest of my blog posts, I stand by it.
Folks have their opinions - and that's fine - but in the end, the readers aren't paying my salary, the powers-that-be at the paper stand by my op-ed wholeheartedly and no, Zen, I don't have an agenda. Thanks for the hack compliment - but I have absolutely no regrets about the post.
What I find the most interesting is how folks are still talking about this, thus proving my point that race is still a hot, touchy topic that folks are still - STILL having problems coming to terms with. As much progress has been made, there is still so much that needs to be done.
