It would seem the 30 year industry veteran Zach Morris of FGNOnline was telling the truth all along.

A new SEGA Patent for a memory card was approved on 7/7/09 and earlier in the year SEGA successfully gained approval for a new controller.

Now why would SEGA need new controller and new memory card patents?

They're gearing up for a hardware comeback.

They're working on a new games console.

Peripherals for existing consoles that will launch with arcade games that wouldn't fit wiimote mechanics or the 34 button'd PS360 pads.

Or it is just sega renewing Dreamcast patents to avoid theft.

I think there is a possibility for Sega to come back next gen. This gen they've probably watched and learned from the current 3, as well as done a wonderful job as a game dev/publisher.

I've said it before, Sega Dreamcast 2 with Skies of Arcadia 2, Valkyria Chronicles 2, new Shen mue, and a non-sucking-Sonic game + many, many more is coming.

As much as I would welcome it, I just don't see Sega coming back into the hardware business... and even if they would return, they would fail badly. I mean, everyone knows Sega makes great games, but most of them just have to little mass appeal to grant good sales, especially considering how Sonic started to suck after Sonic Adventure 2 (or maybe Heroes)...

New Sega console = winwinwin

I think Kingdom Hearts 3 should be exclusive to this hypothetical new Sega platform. It would make for some great lulz.
