According to the figures published by Sony itself, it has 24 million registered accounts on the PlayStation Network as of E3 2009. That’s about a million more than actual consoles sold at the time – enabled by the fact that single consoles often have multiple accounts - which is a damn fair result all things considered. By comparison the Xbox 360 lays claim to 20 million active - an important word selection there by Microsoft - Xbox Live users, two-thirds of its 30 million install base: still a very respectable result.

Active is a key word. According to the E3 figures reported by the two companies, Sony gamers have downloaded 485 million bits of content, or roughly 20 pieces per user during its lifetime. By contrast Xbox 360 gamers have downloaded 1 billion bits of content, which equates to 50 individual bits of DLC per user. That’s a massive difference.

Perhaps even more painful for Sony is the fact that only 6 million of their 24 million registered PSN users, or 25%, have downloaded Home. That is downloaded, not necessarily using. This is a completely free experience available to anyone and it’s worrying fact that the vast majority of PlayStation Network users couldn’t be stuffed even checking it out, let alone actively participating. In its current form, it is clear that the PSN just isn’t working as well as it could be. So what’s wrong?

It's an interesting read. It also talks about that fee Sony is charging to publishers for downloads and how it's affecting PSN's content.

So much FUD in this OP.

We don't know what the word active is defined as, and we don't know what Sony would consider active either.

2ndly, Sony is nearly half of the downloaded bits even though it has been out a year less, barely even had a network for another year of that, and we don't know of any other outside circumstances like Red ringers having to re-download all their data.

Sony is not feeling pain from home,I forget where it was reported but they are making lots of money off of it. We don't even know what active is in the case of home either.

This "report" is basically just a guy, using the same information that we all have, and drawing useless conclusions from them. They are useless because his points all rely on numbers that don't exist.

Sad? Probably is unless Sony did it first then it's not so sad.

Anyway if Sony did release stats of how many played what how often then people could compare the two to see who is really the most active online. At least when it comes to gaming.

Maybe Sony aren't sad or maybe the figures would embarrass them and that would make them feel... sad.

Lots of people pay for XBL so i'd be dam mad if MS did a worst job than Sony's PSN

lol i love the way you cant reply to my ealrier post...

umm sorry how are those numbers going to mean anything?it isnt like their showing sales or downloads, perhaps if you were a developer then yeah but apart from that why?

MS publishes it's numbers because it's the leader. That's what the leader does.
Then all the sheep proclaim the leader as number one because there is just no competition.

Sony obviously does not have the online community that MS has been cultivating since the XBOX1.
Therefore, it is stupid for Sony to compete in a numbers game when it is only going to point out that it is less. So, Sony opts for a lack of information strategy, so that nobody, not the reporters, not MS, nobody knows what the numbers are. In this way Sony can still compete on the topic of online community because nobody is really sure what the numbers are either way.

Nobody is sad, or tired, or pitiful or anything. These are marketing strategies of the two companies as they vie for the stronger position. They are both very textbook strategies.

So stop arguing and try to remember that while Sony is being a little evasive on the subject, it highlights MS' own evasiveness in their own published numbers.

Very poor article. It fails to make note that the PSN Account isn't just a PS3 thing, it is a universal login. It is linked between the Official PS World Sites, PS Blogs, PSP, and PS3 so telling the number of active accounts isn't easy because of the fact that a user might just post on the Official PlayStation forums meaning it is an active account.

so basically to actually play online you have to pay,so only 11 million actually play online

Can you confirm how many people actually play online on their PS3's? i bet it is nowhere near 11 million active users playing online......

11 Million gold users on xbox live is higher than PS3's and Wii's online active userbase, 11 million is a huge number, biggest gaming network in the world and this isn't including the other 29 million active silver users on xbox live (total = 31 million)

Math fail? How exactly does 11 + 29 = 31?

And you're pulling numbers out of nowhere. We have no idea how many active silver members there are, and you certainly don't either.

that's not the point auron. The point is that there are some numbers out there. Very important numbers, mind you. They are there and they are certainly better than the PSN numbers.
