Killzone 2 sold more than Resident Evil 5 in UK [UPDATE]
According to ELSPA and Gfk Charttrack, Sony's Killzone 2 has so far sold more than Capcom's Resident Evil 5 in 2009.
What was most surprising when I was browsing ELSPA and Gfk Charttrack's top selling video games of 2009 was not that the list was dominated byfamily-orientated Nintendo Wii games, but that Killzone 2 was positioned ahead of Resident Evil 5.
If you look back to each of the game's launches, Killzone 2 managed to hold onto the UK All Format's top spot for only one week, compared to Resident Evil 5's three week stint. It's also important to note that the latter game was released for two platforms, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.*
Moreover, although Killzone 2 released one month earlier in February, to beat out a franchise as popular as Resident Evil, even if only in the UK, in the first half of 2009, is quite a feat.
Unlike Sony, Capcom was happy to release worldwide sales numbers for their title, announcing that they had shipped a massive five-million units of Resident Evil 5 by the end of May this year.
Of course, I don't for one second believe that Killzone 2 has achieved such a number, with the only real idea of how much the game has sold is its 200,000 UK sales awardachieved in April.
So with the following top ten sales chart released by Gfk Charttrack and provided by the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA), we now know that Killzone 2 actually performed very well in the country (most likely with massive first week sales), so well in fact that it has sold more than Resident Evil 5 in the first half of 2009. Maybe web-hype did turn into real-world sales in the end?
*It is possible that the positions below are for individual platforms, meaning that Resident Evil 5 might only have charted in the top 10 for the Xbox 360. Still, Killzone 2 selling more than Resident Evil 5 on the Xbox 360, especially considering the much smaller PS3 installed base, is quite surprising.

[UPDATE] - The chart provided has been confirmed to be individual format numbers after a slight blunder by ESPLA, with the multiplatform chart now listed below.
Resident Evil 5's position is for the Xbox 360 only, with Killzone 2 on the PS3 appearing one position above. As stated before, this is still a considerable achievement for the game. Especially since we're told that Killzone 2's All Formats position is only just out of the top 10 at number 11.
