I think that the DS, along with the wii, are in a land of their own, they are not so much Video Game platforms anymore as they are straight up electronic toys. They are surely still fantastic devices, and do offer a rich gaming experience, I just think it's overshadowed by the other.

I highly disagree with you on that.  The Wii and the DS are the only Video Game Platforms anymore.  They are the only system focused purely on gaming.  The PSP and HD consoles are drifting towards being more multi-media systems.

if you think brain age, wii fit, wii sports and wii music count as gaming, you're horrible incorrect.

Also, wii vitality.

lets not forget my cooking coach.

Pokemon is half hardcore half casual since you can play for the funny monsters (my nephews do) or really enjoy the Magic-like game.

I think Pikachu is mostly hardcore though in the way he's so yellow with no compromise, but my girlfriend has a very casual Pokemon plush, so ultimately I don't know.

That was not an answer to my question.

You never asked me a question

I think people are getting the wrong idea out of my post.. i'll make some small post here to try and explain better.

If you're a parent, buying your 6 year old daughter a game console, what do you get? Wii and DS.
When hes 10, what do you get XB360. wii.

I would assume half of the people who own a ds are under 15.
25% around 8-14.
(Western world)

why? price, brand recognition, saturatio of shovelware.

PSP GTA:China town wars..? I'm not too sure, its too kiddy in its graphics to appeal to most GTA fans, but maybe.

http://www.vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=5165&region=All is the highest selling portable core game.

EDIT: That is fine, I gamed when I was that age too, but let me tell you this, I never thought of which console to get based on the quality of the core games it had, even though I only played core games.. my parents just bought what was advertised more i guess.

Its very sad you think a game has to be gritty and mature to be classed as core, you think just because Pokemon is cartoon that it isn't a core game?

I never gave off that opinion, since when was elite beat agents, castlevania, professor layton and advance wars gritty? read back, I never made that opinion. I only used GTA because someone asked how GTA:CW would work on the PSP.

Maybe I'm wrong for thinking thats your "opinion", but an explanation as to why Pokemon isn't core would be nice.

It's too kiddy, am I right Mr. digitalentourage? =)

I'm late to this debate...

The reason the PSP will never catch the DS is because the DS has a 58 million unit lead.

That's why. There's nothing to debate.

Pokemon is one of my favorite game francises to be honest, I've bought and owned every single main game and remake including platinum. I honestly think it's on the edge personally. I'm super hyped for the G/S Remakes too. So, i'll go ahead and say that I never really thought of including pokemon in the discussion, its a no brainer and would sell wherever it was, I was simply trying to draw the comparison between the DS/psp on a game of equivilent nature.

so yeah, if we include games that are both core and casual, then Pokemon/Mario is the highest selling. But i'd go with the majority of sales for each of those games being to casual gamers

@ digitalentourage: I think you're ignoring the bigger picture. Your argument about the 'core', highly rated DS titles not selling well is pretty misinformed and the sales you posted aren't accurate. Why did you handpick a couple of games, most of which have actually sold very well, ignore countless others and then say games without Mario or Zelda in the name "simply do not sell"? What the hell?

You can say the majority of DS owners "do not own it for the core games", but the same could just as easily apply to the PSP. Why are you making it sound as if every last one of those who bought a PSP is a 'core gamer'? The PSP is also flooded with casuals. I'll also take this time to remind people that core games do under-perform on other consoles as well, it's not some Nintendo exclusive disease.

How technical is your game?

I love kiddy games. Professor layton, pokemon, henry hatsworth and patapon are my favorite portable franchises.
