Forums - Microsoft - Zero Punctuation's Yahtzee Reviews: Halo 3

His angers and frustrations with games are real, but I realize he talks more about those than praises because that makes it funny.

His review of Bioshock mentioned at the start that he definitely loved things about the game, but then 90% of it was just him bashing the game hilariously. Which I like.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Legend11 threw a fit when I said Halo was a mindless shooter and now other people say it and nobody seems to have a problem. /sigh Whatever.

The point is that mindless shooter does not equate to bad. Its just a different style. The campaign mode probably doesn't qualify as mindless but the multiplayer most certainly does. And since everyone points to the multiplayer as the primary gameplay mode...well I'm sure you get it.

Also, I have to say his line about "Any game that has to make excuses for itself was never a perfect 10 to begin with" is dead on. And it doesn't just apply to Halo 3 , it applies to a LOT of games that have received 10s recently.

Anyways, my overall take on the review is that its a good review IF you are from the perspective of not too interested in Multiplayer and either haven't played or don't remember the story from the first two games. If you are Halo Hyped and love multiplayer the review is not written for your viewpoint and really doesn't apply to you. Thats my take on it anyways.

^ALSO, he seems to be, primarily, a PC gamer anyway.

People went crazy over at Kotaku when it was posted.

Buying Halo without a desire to play multiplayer is like going to the playground by yourself and getting on the Seesaw.

I don't think he is missing the point of Halo 3, I think he has it right on. Reviewers are constantly giving big hype games that turn out to be good perfect 10s but they don't deserve it. A 10 implies perfection, and a game isn't perfect if half of it (i.e. the single player) is passable or good but not great.

bingo

Halo 3 single player, is not that great, some things are REALLY fun, but some lvls i found i just wanted to get through it so i can say i beat it and go back to multiplayer (2nd to last mission, last one was awsome)

IN single player, halo does not deserve above a 9 for its single player, but you throw in forge, theater and a very VERY fun multi, and you got yourself a kick ass game

in all i can agree with the guy, since he hasnt played the mult.

Like dolla dolla said, it isnt made to be a single player awsome experience, that was put in to "finish the fight"

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

He has the balls to say that Halo single player is mediocre, something that other reviewers cannot bring themself to admit. For that, i salute you sir.

i dont get it either how a game can be perfect ...but then a reviewer will have problems with something---it what they make 9.5 for people

So, wait, he shouldn't review the single player portion? See, if it were a game like Warhawk without a single player portion, he wouldn't review it, and that would be fine. I'm pretty sure he can review a full aspect of the game.

I liked it, but I knew exactly what I was getting into and saw a bit of polish on gameplay I had already seen before. He was thrown in, and after seeing the game hyped to all hell, had expectations that are reasonable for the hype, and in his opinion failed. Which isn't shocking, even I think the hype was rediculous, but at least I theorized that Microsoft cannot allow Halo to fail and have a fairly impressive marketing machine.
