Once again, no one cares that the Wii uses like 1/10th the power consumption of the other consoles and how that impacts the environment. It's simply about what materials they use in the development.

Actually energy efficiency is one of the criteria:

http://www.greenpeace.org/raw/content/international/press/reports/nintendo-guide-to-greener-electronics-12.pdf

However, Greenpeace is too lazy to do their own research, so they gave Nintendo a score of 0 for most things, as Nintendo didn't give them information.

If they did the slightest bit of research (like a one minute trip to Google), they'd realize the Wii is one of, if not the most energy-efficient console ever.

I'm sure they know through "unofficial" ways, but that would be a different report though.

This one rates the environmental policies as made available for the public through the producer's website. It's clearly stated on the linked page.

It's basically about the commitments each producer declares officially and the transparency of their policies towards the general public, not about the products themselves. Its usefulness may be limited but its methodology is transparent.

@WereKitten: But then they shouldn't call it "Guide to Greener Electronics"... It just makes them look dishonest. Do they publish any similar guide where they actually do research?

^I frankly can't answer you... I do my own research about this stuff, and I never saw that report save for the links posted here.

It gets weirder and weirder. From Greenpeace's FAQ:

Why does Nintendo with the most energy efficient game console score zero on energy efficiency?

Nintendo has the most energy efficient console when compared with Sony’s Playstation or Microsoft’s Xbox. However, no game console meets the Energy Star standard for PCs (v.4.0) the standard used also for game consoles.

How does that warrant a score of zero?

I know it's weird, but basically the logic seems to be that you get points for getting certified as meeting the requirements of public Energy standards.

No public policy or certification= zero points, evidence of broken policy= negative points.

Take the whole thing for what it is, really... more a guide to the company with the greener PR office. Still, more transparency on environmental issues would be good thus I welcome even this weird initiative.

This would never help me decide what systems to buy... just saying...

oddly enough it is because it they are missing a key features

Power Management

  • Monitor Sleep Mode: within 15 minutes of user inactivity
  • System Sleep Mode: within 30 minutes of user inactivity
  • Wake On LAN and Wake Management features (for some systems)

None of them have "monitor sleep mode", while I know the PS3 will shut off in 1 hour of inactivity, which meets the new video game section of v5 of the energy star guidlines for PCs. The only other area they could miss the energy star criteria is with power supply performance, but I really don't know on that part.

Giving a 0 for missing 1 features is rather lame though.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Ugh.. Greenpeace.... I used to work for them... always seem to be more important to be in the news then actually doing stuff like saving the world.. the money spend in the marketing department could save all the whales.. >_>

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Monitor sleep mode? How is it even possible for a console to implement that...
