Certainly not, it removed most of the elements which GTA fans liked about the series, and kept archaic elements, such as its checkpoint system (or lack thereof), health system and repetitive mission structure, not to mention the unlikable cast. Several other games in 2008 were much better, mirror's edge, gears 2, L4D, LBP all deserved the accolade far more.

Quick question I didn't see addressed. Why are we concluding that GTA IV won GOTY 2008? By my estimations nothing short of at least 8-10 different titles won GOTY from different media outlets and publications including GTA IV, Fallout 3, LBP, MGS4, Saints Row 2, Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Left 4 Dead, and probably some others. Who made the decision that GTA IV is considered to be the de facto GOTY of 2008? It sure wasn't me, and we all know how important my opinion is.

I dunno, for me at least this thread's title doesnt necessarily indicate that GTAIV WAS GOTY 2008, it simply prompts debate on whether or not it deseved to be, irrespective of whether it was or not.

Well it seems many in this thread are saying it's not deserving and then offering up and alternative that deserved it more, which made me think they were saying one game was slighted in favor of another. Maybe though I'm just burnt out on this topic altogether since we did this enough back in January and it's six months later now.

After playing GTA4 I can safely say no it wasn't, it was a great game but iy was just more of the same just much prettier. Super Mario Galaxy easily was my fave last year, Little Big Planet was great too, no Galaxy but it kicks GTA 4.

Nope, when I heard that it won the goty I was like Whaaaat?! That game was worse than any other game on the list. I guess they didn't want to make PS3/360 gamers mad by naming an exclusive game to be goty.
NOTE: Some people are usure of the tocpic, I'm guessing the OP is talking about the Spike TV VGA which GTA IV was named GOTY.
