ugh no.

it vista make over.
installed on a celeron 2.53ghz 1.2gb ram with a nvidia fx 5500.
it ran slow and used most of my ram. leaving with only 100mb of boot.

had problems with AC 97 drivers (doesn't work well with 5.1 windows 7).

and Aero still clunky as ever.

while it a 10% improvement over vista.

i can run ubuntu with all the effects and never go down 50fps.

i am using ibm lotus symphony for office, netbeans for school proyects, banshee for music, firefox 3.5 as a power.

ps3 media server for streaming and even some windows applications with whine, i don't think i will have to return to windows in a while.

for gaming machine i think the desktop i built still faster in xp DX9 and steam.

That's because your specifications are not all that great. Your processor is fine, but the RAM could be higher and a better graphics card is needed. Try this:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/upgrade-advisor.aspx

i did, it even said i could run aero,  RC1 was slow =(, actually what really bug me it's sound didn't work well.

1256mb of ram it's not enough for windows 7/vista.

it ran well on the notebook with the core 2 duo, but well thats muscle.

but ubuntu flies in both machines, i am thinking of getting rid of vista in the notebook too.

OK so from a minimalist perspect of effency here is what I'm getting

Xoj is saying that Win7 is not as memory effecient as WinXP, but pretty descent with using CPU performance.

Zen is saying that MEM and CPU usage is better than Vista and is praising the features putting it on a higher platform than XP.

In both cases sounds like XP is a better solution if your not looking for feature rich enviroment. Is that about right?

no,  ubuntu is, or mac OS, both have better windows 3d animations, Compiz and Quartz 3d. which include many all of the features of windows 7, even emulation with virtualbox and parallel of windows xp, security and will run better in old hardware.

saying something better than vista, it's like saying "well i am least he is more smart than rock". doesn't say much.

OMG, I can't believe people are trying to tell people to switch to umbuntu, lol. Bro, this is a gaming website, you know that?

Anybody who wants a ghetto OS and who don't play games, save your 50 bucks.

Anybody who wants the top of the line, newest gaming OS, pay 50 bucks now, and upgrade from a fresh install like Makin'Music says.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Couple of questions
Can't people here in Europe just go for the download option when buying?

I have vista Ultimate on one of my machines so if I got the win 7 home I could just do a fresh install as upgrades have to be Ultimate to Ultimate?

So we can't buy it from the US store.
All we get from the UK store is buy vista now get win 7 for free.
Cheapest is £166.
I already bought vista so why am I getting stiffed?

Because it's 49.99 dollars until the 11th of this month, when it moves up to 120? Maybe? Yethink?

The offer isn't valid at Amazon.co.uk, and since I live in the EU, I'd most likely rack up a ton of additional duties, shipping and handling costs by ordering it from the states.

And since we're talking about the Pro version (I'd need the XP emulation and don't have a spare XP license ATM), the costs would likely be in the 120-150 dollar range after the additional expenses. Not exactly that desirable anymore, now is it?

It's a shame you can't order the download version.
If you want a disc copy you have to pay an extra $14.99 anyway

Fallout 1 seems to work in Win 7 itself. It requires some compatibility setting. I used it with all the setting check boxes marked and in Win 98 compatibility, but it seems to be working so far. I'll play some more later.

That's a relief. I'm guessing that if FO1 works fine, then 2 and Tactics will also work since they both use the same engine (Tactics has a modified one IIRC).

Heroes of Might and Magic 5, Starcraft and Beyond Good and Evil also work fine in Win 7 itself, but they didn't require any setting changes when I ran them. The others that I do have, I can't find the disks for, so I'm not going to bother looking into them. From what I've seen so far, games haven't been too much of a problem in 7, I think the XP virtual machine is mainly more for other specific softwares.

Interesting. I'm asking this because some games that worked in XP are exhibiting more or less serious problems in Vista, and I ran into some articles that claimed the XP emulation as a load of bunk. If the games do indeed mostly work, then my most serious obstacle for switching my OS seems to be cleared.

However, I'll probably reserve judgement until I get my hands on the thing. I've already been burned a few times by Microsoft.

Hmm, I don't think I tried the Emporer Dune game, but the earlier RTS was alright. I preferred the 1992 Dune game though. Not a RTS exactly, but it was pretty fun from what I remember.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor:_Battle_for_Dune

Emperor was a relatively obscure strategy game that was released around 2001 by Westwood. It had all sorts of goodies like a non-linear campaign, three relatively balanced factions and recruitable subfactions, great gameplay and audiovisual presentation etc. IMO it's one of the best RTS games Westwood ever released, and it's certainly better than Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 - and it's a damn shame more people never got to try it out.

Yeah, I looked it up when you first mentioned it. I may look into playing it some time if I can find it somewhere.

Also, I am fully in support with your comment that you'd like to try 7 out before switching. Always good to do. That's part of the reason I got the beta and now RC. If you have a second hard drive, I'd recommend installing the RC there to try it out some yourself. Then you can see which games work and how the XP virtual machine works and such. I'd get the version that at least has the XP virtual machine. I don't know any specific reason why I'd need the next version up, but I'm not completely sold on buying now myself. Yes, I do plan to get it some time, but currently money is a little tight and I'd rather spend it on other things. Hopefully I can catch another deal some time before the RC expires.

Get it from newegg. Shop around. It's a great deal for Americans. The XP emulation...why do you need that? You running a proprietary software for a business? What are you running that can't run in compatibility mode?

Basically, I'm getting Windows 7(fresh install) with every feature I would ever use, for 49.99.

How would you rate the deal I'm getting?

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I think it doesn't matter. MS could release another 10 OS' with the same reviews Vista got, and what would it do? They'd lose a fraction of a fraction of a percent to other OS'? Face it, for a vast majority of users (Casual and PC buffs alike) MS is pretty much the only game in town.

Both MS and Apple took the same route this time it seems. More of a refinement, than any huge leap forward. Though I'm hearing 7 is almost a glorified service pack, that you're paying at least $50 for. Not sure what the final review on Snow Leopard is, only that to upgrade for current users is only about $30. But again, more of a refinement (Focusing on speed, and taking up less room on your HDD) than a totally new OS.

This seems like as good as place as any to ask, I'm more than likely going to get Windows 7 for my laptop because I hate Vista with the passions of 100 fiery suns, but if I install the release candidate will it work most programs?

I'm can live without gaming on my laptop for a while so I don't mind if those don't work well, but are there any huge compatibility issues at the moment?

-edit-

Nevermind, forgot the other guy in my office has been using it and he loves it and said there wasn't really any campatibility issues so I'll throw away Vista tonight and start using the RC.
