Fallout 1 seems to work in Win 7 itself. It requires some compatibility setting. I used it with all the setting check boxes marked and in Win 98 compatibility, but it seems to be working so far. I'll play some more later.

That's a relief. I'm guessing that if FO1 works fine, then 2 and Tactics will also work since they both use the same engine (Tactics has a modified one IIRC).
Heroes of Might and Magic 5, Starcraft and Beyond Good and Evil also work fine in Win 7 itself, but they didn't require any setting changes when I ran them. The others that I do have, I can't find the disks for, so I'm not going to bother looking into them. From what I've seen so far, games haven't been too much of a problem in 7, I think the XP virtual machine is mainly more for other specific softwares.
Interesting. I'm asking this because some games that worked in XP are exhibiting more or less serious problems in Vista, and I ran into some articles that claimed the XP emulation as a load of bunk. If the games do indeed mostly work, then my most serious obstacle for switching my OS seems to be cleared.
However, I'll probably reserve judgement until I get my hands on the thing. I've already been burned a few times by Microsoft.
Hmm, I don't think I tried the Emporer Dune game, but the earlier RTS was alright. I preferred the 1992 Dune game though. Not a RTS exactly, but it was pretty fun from what I remember.

Emperor was a relatively obscure strategy game that was released around 2001 by Westwood. It had all sorts of goodies like a non-linear campaign, three relatively balanced factions and recruitable subfactions, great gameplay and audiovisual presentation etc. IMO it's one of the best RTS games Westwood ever released, and it's certainly better than Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 - and it's a damn shame more people never got to try it out.
