If they don't start re-claiming their place in the console wars, then the next generation, sony would be pretty much F*****.

The only hope is PSP Go!. That should/will be sony's profitable machine.

everyones entitled to an opinion but this one is crap, just because you mess up in one generation does not mean you will loose the next , microsoft got outsold by the ps2 at about 100 milllion last gen. Has microsoft done bad this gen? not at all

Sony have said that there is a bit of a "new product premium" taking advantages of suckers like myself who are willing to pay ridiculous prices to get the console day 1 {PS2: £300, PS3: £425, PSP: £180, PSP Slim & Lite: £130, {PSPGo:£230} all day 1)

And I think that your opinion on my opinion is crap too. Granted, they won't be pretty much F***** but they will start off badly.

Microsost did very bad last gen but they cut the lifespan short and launched the x360 1 year before the ps3. Which then they gained a major advantage when Sony launched the ps3 at 599$.

Now I don't wanna waste any more time arguing.

PCEZZZ

I won't be suprised if the only thing Sony does for the holiday season is come out with a new bundle. Not saying that's what will happen, just that I won't be suprised if they do ;).

All these people saying that Go and Slim cannot co-operate at similar price points, people don't think shall I get a handheld or shall I get a console, you will want one of them (though I might be getting a slim and Go), you won't be torn between the 2 products

@ kowenici, say that when Gran Turismo 5 comes out. Yeah very few have a meaningful effect on sales, GeoW 2 didn't really, but GT 5 will I am less convinced about GoW 3 though

I think GT 5 is just as important as a $50 price point, it is one of the very few games that has mass appeal worldwide, MGS 4 was big everywhere, but not GT big

GT4 had no affect on PS2 sales whatsoever.

And I really strongly believe that if the prices are $250 for Go and $300 for PS3 the Go's sales would be canibalized.  However, I feel that they will be $250 and $350 if the PS3 does get a cut at all.

People, usually teens, buy hand helds because they can say its "theirs".  They can afford them because they are cheaper and more personal.  But if you haven't got a PSP or a PS3 (the audience Sony should be targetting, not their current customers who just want to get the new hardware), and you walk in and see a PS3 for just $50 more, I can guarantee at least a couple people out of every 10 customers will be getting the PS3 instead.  Not to mention these are usually purchased by parents, and if parents can get something that offers great movies for their HDTV along with gaming and all those extras for only $50 more I'm sure they will grab that one.

GT 4 was the second GT of the gen, so obviously less of an effect. I just think somebody is either in the market for a console or a handheld, I don't think there will be that many problems, and let's not forgot, the 3000 is still on the market

Very true.  And I guess I should say that the 3000 will also slightly canabilize the PSP Go until it drops down to a similar $180 price.  Even the DSi is only about $30-40 more than a DSLite and it has quite a bit of additions while removing the gameboy port.

yeah, and people will stop buying Harley Davidson 'cause they can buy a really great car instead, a whole four-wheeled car wow!!

Seriously dude, you know SHIT about consumers and the market.

That's funny, I didn't realize we were talking about vehicles.  I must have gotten on the wrong forum today.  And since when are Harley Davidson motorcycles only $50 less than a nice sports car?

I'm glad you took the time to make an actual argument against my point rather than just post some random analogy that doesn't fit and an immature curse oriented statement.  Oh wait....

^lol Talk about inmature, my my why I waste my time here, I guess for fun....what a good laugh, lol.

Maybe it's just me, but if you're talking about $50 less than $300 or $250, it could be compared to $2,000 or $3,000 less than say... $22,000...but of course that's just me, oh inmature me, lol. The point stands child, but I was wrong...you certainly know shit about nothing.

LOL sony will drop the price.

The end.

Microsoft wouldn't cut the 360 price to $150. That reeks of desparation, and would be a last resort. They have to think about profit, as well- Arcade is already the most popular SKU, and cutting price is cutting income, which is cutting profits. Microsoft probably profits more on a $300 Pro than a $200 Arcade. They would prefer that people bought the Pro. So they would have to cut the Pro to $250 as well, which would lose even MORE profit. So their choices are:

1) $150 Arcade, $250 Pro, $300 Elite. Like I've said, this isn't very logical.

2) $179 Arcade, $250 Pro, $300 Elite. Like the last one, but more likely.

3) $200 Arcade, $300 Elite (essentially changing the Pro to the Elite and cutting the Elite)

I believe the current Ars Technica rumour suggests 3)

Nintendo DEFINITELY isn't going to cut the price of the Wii- it sells gangbusters already. It's been above the PS3 and 360 combined for the last few weeks, and the last time one of the HD consoles outsold it in a week was back in June 2008, when MGS4 launched. It only really needs a boost in Japan, and upcoming games + new colours will do that.

I only think Sony will cut the PS3's price this year because of their forecast. They wouldn't increase YoY sales by 30% for no reason when they can see that they are clearly down YoY at the moment. Sony are not idiots- they got their last prediction spot on (10 million in FY 08). $300 is probably most likely, with some feature or other taken out (I would say Bluetooth and WLAN are two likely candidates- separate adaptors could be made available), with an 80GB HDD, and the current 160GB would be cut to $400 (still bundled with a game, with all features intact)

And they'll probably make PS2 emulation possible via a FW update, so people will stop complaining about that.
