Forums - Nintendo - High Voltage explains choice of "generic" look for The Conduit

Lol Final Fantasy Artsy fartsy...

....
anyways they're trying to say ,"its just cheesy fun game we are not taking it seriously" which i knew from the moment i saw the poster.
btw Doom should be compared to being an Artsy Fartsy to The Conduit not Final Fantasy.

Final fantasy has been generic for a long time. Last one I played (and liked) was FF7.

Final Fantasy never has to resort to generic art styles to be a multi million seller

Final Fantasy is so generic with half the characters the only way to tell if they are male or female is if:

A:  They have breats.

B.  A bulge in their pants (even then...some of the ones that don't....)

GENERIC?!

its  one of the most evolving series ever, never have the same story, characters, music, and gameplay.

LOL.   You were being sarcastic right?  Generic is not a bad thing if it's done right.  It's music is high quality, but it's not anything "different", etc...  It's always the same story, you have to save the world, etc...

When it's a first effort it's safer this way esp when half the time they had no publisher.
They even had it rated T for Teen. The Conduit was made to get thier feet wet make it more for the masses and if it succeeded (so far it's looking good but have to wait and see about sales) Grinder and Gladiator look to be a bit more bold. I bet both will have an M rating...Gladiator obviously will.

Madworld and HOTDO from Sega aimed at one demographic and no doubt a smaller % of Wii owners and it's sales showed that.(BTW I own and like MW) Also for those on Final Fantasy,it's fairly cliche by now and some of you were not there in 1989 when all Square made was Shovelware and was about to go bankrupt, they made a little game with a very very very basic story as one last hurrah before shuttings it's doors but we know the rest is history. Not saying HVS will turn into a big huge AAA company (too soon to make any predictions like that) but The Conduit was trying to be bold with caution at the same time to help attempt to get thier name out but not so alienating it breaks the bank.

Right now for years they made half assed games to pay the bills,I think they finally want to make good games and pay the bills. Some say why not do that from the start...maybe it was much harder on smaller developers then and not all are so lucky to break out right away.

This gen with Wii was the perfect opportunity to like I said make a game they wanted with some risk but also careful.

^^^Thank you Ryudo.

so what wii games are either too generic or too niche now?

more than half the games i play are generic. In fact the majority of games on a whole, many that get great scores, are generic.

one lil FPS on the wii and all i'm hearing about the game is generic.

generic gerncier cgenrice

I think the big thing was they wanted to focus on getting the engine down and the gameplay, downplaying the art elements for future titles.

If Wii was full of FPS like the HD consoles and PC there would be no way HVS could get away with just a 'generic' FPS approach but since Wii is (vertually) devoid of anything but WW2 FPS anything they did would be unique.

They are not a top tier developer and decided, smartly, to stick to the tried and true. If The Conduit proves a great success they can invest in better writers and artists for the sequel.

I would like to hear them explain why they made it generic and ugly instead of generic and beautiful. It's the ugly part I'm really turned off on, not the artstyle in itself.

This is invisible text!

^^ ugly part? this is supposed to be top-tier for the wii.
