Forums - Sony - Will Sony ever make money off of PS3 hardware sales?

Based on a quote by Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda the actual cost of the PS3 is still 10% higher (~$40US) than it's retail price (at least up to the start of April 2009).  Now this is obviously better than last year when it was losing over $100US per system but considering the speculation that there might be a price cut this year it does beg the question, will Sony ever make money off PS3 hardware?

It's an especially interesting question since Sony is obviously willing to make money off their new PSPgo system.  So why would they be willing to make money off the PSPgo hardware and not the PS3?  Unless the PSP is doing better than the PS3 is seems like a pretty odd decision to make.  Anyways I'm curious to find out if anyone else can make sense of Sony's current business decisions and if you think they'll ever make money off of PS3 hardware sales.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

oh they make money, just loose more

as for making a profit? no

Yes, when Miyamoto die.

as far as the PSPGo is concerned, i myself am unsure as to why they're willing to profit off of that right away while losing money on the PS3.

i'm almost positive that the PS3 will eventually profit. i doubt sony will recover all of its losses this gen, but as costs of manufacturing the system go down, it should be easier to make money.

I don't see how that would do....anything to Sony.

PS3 slim would reduce costs drastically.

Also, i THINK around now they will be starting to use the 45nm Cell chip.
This will also likely reduce costs.

What do you mean it seems like an odd decision to make money of PSP Go.... Firstly, they might actually be making money of the existing PSP, secondly, the high price of the PSPGo is likely to be short term to take advantage of the premium of a brand new console, and also to help offset the PS3 price cut.

What really matters is making the console at the right price to make it competitive. They feel that they cannot afford to sell the PS3 for a profit, as it just would not sell, in the long term costing them software sales, and if they do not stay competitive, they might lose support and go out of business. Anyway, to answer your main question, I don't think they will be making any money on the PS3 until the PS4 has been released

They might be making money off the 160gb system
