Yes, fight and kill the Midgar Zolom now.  Level up a bit until Barret has his 2nd limit break power, the one that steals MP.  Steal all the Zolom's MP before it gets close to death and tries its final skill, whatever it's called.  Keep your other characters healed and attacking, then kill it when it's out of MP.   You'll feel baller killing it when you were supposed to run from it.  You can still go back and learn its power later in the game.

As for 6...it's good, but I think 4 is better.  I like the eerie extraterrestrial control of the supposedly main villain element more than Kefka's mundane megalomania.

To me, the game was awesome up to where you leave Midgar, reach Kalm/Chocobo ranch. After you cross the swamp with the Midgar Zolom, it looses its touch a bit. But there are other things that come up: great materias (like summons), filling up the enemy skill materia, Golden Saucer, mating and feeding Chocobos, cool limit breaks, new cool characters. Anyway lots of (spoilerish) more than make up for it.

I'll tell you this early on to save you headache later.

Raise a GOLDEN Chocobo, and get the Knights of The Round Materia, EARLY!!!!

FFVII is an awesome game, but i've got to agree with most FF fans here, FF6 is in a category of it's own (my favourite FF). FFVII to me is my second favourite FF, i like it as much as i like FFXII *leaves thread before he gets stoned for liking FFXII)*.
