"Will they sell a lot of software? Certainly. Will it sell hardware? I think it's an open question... I think that the Halo 3 consumer already has the hardware, because they're playing BioShock and Crackdown and a variety of games that are, in the end, quite similar: first-person shooter experience, multiplayer capable online. Tell me what's new?"

Did you actually read the article linked to that blog post? I can't since I would have to register for the news site it came from. Since we can't see that, it makes me wonder if that is the whole, or even the correct context of what Ashcraft posted.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Funny thing is: BioShock doesn't have any form of multiplayer whatsoever, Crackdown isn't an FPS. Silly Reggie...! xD

But let's put this aside, I think I'm between as well. Like twesterm said, there will surely be an increase in Xbox 360 sales for the next 2-3 weeks to come but I don't expect a huge bump. Who knows, it might be a different scenario for the holiday season though. Also, I have to agree with what Entroper said. I can give an example of some of my friends that are buying a 360 since Halo 3 is out. I guess you could also count me in, I'll be getting a 360 soon since it's the best time to get one anyway (I need something that will sustain me until Brawl is released)!

Whatever happens, it should be interesting to see some hardware sales updates in the coming weeks that's for sure. ;)

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

I think Reggie was just saying they appealed to the same demographic of gamer, and he's probably right for the most part.

Nintendo exec: 'We're working very hard' on Wii supply
But sees shortages through end of year

Nintendo is riding high - and right into Silicon Valley.

The video game company has a bona fide hit on its hands with its Wii console, which has outsold competitors such as Microsoft's Xbox 360 this year. Thanks to the Wii's success - and that of its DS handheld - the company's sales, profits and stock price have zoomed upward over the last year.

Hoping to build on that success, the company is opening a sales and marketing office in Redwood Shores. The idea is to tap into the Valley community for ideas and to be close to what is arguably the epicenter of Web media.

Earlier this month, Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, discussed his company's new Valley office and its recent success during a visit to the Mercury News.

QThe Wii console has been a big hit to date, with you guys having a difficult time meeting demand. This is going to be a bad Christmas for folks still wanting to buy one, isn't it?

AWe have been sold out worldwide since we launched ... Every time we put more into the marketplace, we sell more, which says that we are not even close to understanding where the threshold is between supply and demand.

QThere's been a lot of buzz about Microsoft's "Halo 3." How do you expect it to affect the console battle this holiday season?

AWill they sell a lot of software? Certainly. Will it sell hardware? I think it's an open question. Why? Because I think

GetAd('tile','box','/home_article','','www.mercurynews.com','','null','null');
that the "Halo 3" consumer already has the hardware, because they're playing "Bioshock" and "Crackdown" and a variety of games that are, in the end, quite similar: first-person shooter experience, multiplayer capable online. Tell me what's new?

QSo do you feel like you need to counter "Halo 3" in some way?

ANo.

I am fortunate to have a series of (games) that are all going to drive substantial sales for me and are all targeted to different parts of the consumer mix.

QIf supply were not an issue, how many Wiis could you be selling?

AWe don't know. What I can tell you is that typically, our inventory is lasting a day ... I don't think we will know when supply crosses with demand till after the holiday season.

QWhat is it about your manufacturing system that doesn't allow you to catch up with demand?

AThe issue is not a lack of production. The issue is we went in with a curve that was aggressive, but the demand has been substantially more than that. And the ability to ramp up production and to sustain it is not a switch that you flick on. We're working very hard to make sure that consumers are satisfied this holiday, but I can't guarantee that we're going to meet demand. As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record we won't.

QCan you give those moms out there who are desperate to have a Wii for the holidays any pragmatic advice on how to get one?

A(They) should have a range of outlets that they are frequenting: a Target, a Wal-Mart, a Best Buy, a Toys 'R' Us, a GameStop, CircuitCity, all of the likely suspects. They ought to talk to the manager and ask them, "When do you get your deliveries?" And they ought to stop by on a frequent basis. We're going to flow hardware. It's not that it's going to show up only on one occasion. It's going to be constantly flowing in.

The only other pragmatic advice is that we're aware of the situation, and we're working very hard to address it. Believe me, I'm constantly pushing for more capacity and more volume.

QOne of the issues that keeps being raised about the Wii is the question of whether two or three years from now people are still going to be buying it, particularly as prices of the other consoles come down and the next-generation features they offer - realistic graphics, high-definition capabilities - start to become more affordable.

AThe best way to answer that question is that in our view, we're just getting started ... We're looking at our business and constantly looking for ... how do we continue driving the business forward? And I believe because of that relentless pursuit for more, that this platform is going to be vibrant for quite some time.

QAre you already planning your replacement for the Wii?

AYou know, our hardware group, literally as soon as the system's out the door, they're already thinking about what's next. That's true for any of our platforms.

starcraft: "I and every PS3 fanboy alive are waiting for Versus more than FFXIII.
Me since the games were revealed, the fanboys since E3."

Skeeuk: "playstation 3 is the ultimate in gaming acceleration"

I think that the weekly sales charts will tell us whether Halo 3 sells systems or not. 360 certainly has had a boost in recent weeks even though sales of other PS3 and Wii have declined or stayed steady.

Is it because of Halo 3? Time will tell.

it wont hurt it--i mean we can all agree on that--but after the initial burp in sales what will be next--sure xbox has some great games but most of the people only know about halo--i think they really creadted a monter and its going to come back and bite them in the A$$

That's the big point...yes, Halo 3 will sell a lot of 360s. But can it create long-term demand? Uf MS sells a million 360s every month to the end of the year, then yeah, Halo 3 did the job really well. I think a much more likely scenario is that they sell close to million in September, then it drops off in October. In that case, Halo 3 still did its job, but it isn't changing the game.

Of course, I think most of us already know that Halo 3 isn't going to change the game...it just gives MS a big edge against Sony.

I think the "Halo fans already have a 360" argument is bunk. Do a lot of them already have the 360, yes, but I'm sure there are just as many out there who were waiting to buy a 360, and Halo tipped the scales for them. Plus, the Halo-edition 360 should drive additional hardware sales. I expect to see a sizeable bump in NA hardware sales.

I totally agree; I predict * looks into his crystal ball * 150k+

Ok so you think it is bunk yet you predict 150K. That is only 60K more than the total two weeks previous. Even if we assume the first day total of 2.4 million for the week, that means only 1 in 40 didn't have a console. So 97.5% of  Halo buyers already had the console and that is not a sizeable percentage? Now weekly totals for Halo should be larger making your numbers more absurd.

I agree with Reggie, and I think the 360 will move more like 350,000. Yes that is a big relative bumb but compared to the numbers of copies Halo sold it is not that big. That still is only 15%. I hear people talk like every other person was buying an Xbox. That would imply 1,000,000 consoles moved. If that happened I will eat my hat.

I think long term the Xbox weekly totals might be 10% higher for 18 months or so due to Halo. But for the September and October I would atribute 500,000 consoles total to Halo 3.

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

*naznatips is exempt

Thank you, smbu2000. It does seem like a bit of smack talk, but not at the level some people on other sites are making it out to be.

So by your assumptions the same thing should happen to Sony with MGS4. I think MS has a big hit on their hands that will sell systems for a long time. It may not sell a new console with every purchase but what game has?

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.
