it's a placeholder date. Retailers that do preorders are required to supply a date, which is why you see placehold dates given for games before an actual release date is announced.

I do agree that it might be a placeholder but there are some games that are just listed as "date pending" and "TBA" or my favorite "12/31/09"

I love the 12/31 dates :) I think the fact that GT5 wasn't playable at E3 though pretty much confirms it isn't coming this year.
