Forums - Sony - Heavy Rain devs releasing mo-cap middleware

The developers of Heavy Rain are releasing the Motion Kit Collection, a software library of animations and captured motions, reports DevelopMag.

Quantic Dream says the Motion Kit Collection is “the industry’s first high-end, off-the-shelf solution for real-time 3D character animation.”

Heavy Rain is well-known for its realistic character movement. Many game companies capture their own motions, which is highly expensive. The release of a professional library of captured motions is intended to reduce that cost, which would make the use of motion-captured animations in games more enticing to game developers.

This is pretty interesting..

However it could mean 1 bad thing.. more games with the same animations used.. Even if they're realistic, if 10 games uses the same walk animation.. I think you'd notice XD

Anyways it could also work to save a lot of time for developers which is ofcourse the good thing.

I think it's a good way to recoup some of the costs from Heavy Rain.

And I doubt you would notice that much, it's not like there is a huge difference in games right now anyway

I know that some school somewhere did a project like this and had a huge library of motion captured animations on rigs all set and ready to go.

I'm not sure if its free or not.

And I'm pretty sure that the animations can be tweaked so that not everyone would have the same walk animation XD

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

That's actually a pretty good idea.

yea well i guess if they use rag physics like kz or the animation system of uncharted it wont be noticable.

If I was Sony, I would completley buy off those libraryes, and give it away free with the dev-tools.

Nice idea. I would have to imagine Quantic Dream spent a fortune on all their mo-cap time.

So as has been mentioned, an excellent idea to recoup some costs.

/sarcasm on
It all will become useless once MS have released their full body motions capturing Natal
/sarcasm off
