Forums - Microsoft - Magic: the Gathering for XBLA = bad

twestern, well I respect your opinion and agree in part but I think you need to realize "it's a bad game" is an opinion. Several people, including me like it a lot. That doesn't mean we are noobs or haven't played since 1995, it just means we accept it for what it is. Super streamlined arcade-like magic that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to play competitively.

You glossed over my point that they could patch it. Dungeon crawlers and card games are known for being constantly patched and fixed as the players demand. We don't know for sure that will happen but it could. Even a full fledged deck builder is a definite possibility. Who knows, give it time :)

edit: also magic was always based in luck of the draw.  But its not all luck, even in this version.  You still have to know the strategies to win.  If you make mistakes you will lose.  You have to know what to bring out when, what to enchant, when to attack, when not to attack, when to defend, how much mana to leave open in case you need it, etc. etc.

It will always involve luck but even in a simplistic version of the game like this you have to actually know how to play and not make mistakes.

I used to play Magic several years ago, it was amazing (and I'm sure it still is), best Collectable Card Game ever.

Magic the Gathering always had an huge potential as a video game:
A Free-2-Play Online game with micro-transactions, which would allow you to buy virtual decks and boosters. They could even have an optional monthly subscription that would give you guides, stats free cards and allow you to enter in cash-prize tournaments.

But they always screw up, it's like developers never understood how to translate the game into a videogame. Aren't I right?

Are you being sarcastic or have you actually missed a PC game? o.O

Magic Online

It's actually pretty well done and I had fun with it, I just don't love the microtransactions and not actually owning the cards the I buy (unless I manage to get the whole set).

They could patch it, but that would require it to be well received in the first place.  I think it will continue to get sets but I don't think they will get enough attention to rework the game.

Yes, there's still some skill in there in how you play, but with the cards they provide you and the fact you still can't form your own deck to make your own strategies it's still a lot more luck and skill.

They don't even have sideboarding and there's more skill in that than that whole game.

I'm guessing, you aside twestern, that is has been well received :) Lots of people are playing it and I'm assuming good sales. Time will tell.

I'm optimistic. If they don't fix it, oh well, wasted opportunity. Like I said I feel personally like I've gotten my 800 points worth. I just can't imagine the programmers being magic players aren't having realized by now it has issues and needs fixes.

I know there was one, but I also heard it recieved awful reviews.

About the microtransactions, I heard nowadays that the reallife magic cards come with a code that allows you to put it into the PC game and give you a digital copy of the card for you, but I'm not sure.

To be honest having owning the physical copies of the cards is overrated. Ever since I quit Magic I stashed away my cards in a box in the garage and never touched them again, and I had some pretty cool cards, especially my rare and valuable "Mox Diamond".

I took a look at the challenges today and I actually like those (there use to be a website that did the same exact thing, just *much* more complicated).

They set you up in a situation where you have one turn to win and you have to figure out how to win with what you have. It's a fun little puzzle and it's a shame there are only eight of them and they aren't that hard. Still though, those are a nice addition.

You heard pretty bad, because it seems to me it received good reviews. Not excellent, but not awful by any means

I actually really enjoy this game. While the timer is annoying, it isn't enough to really turn me off. I actually really like the idea of pre-made decks for head to head play because then it isn't about who spent the most money on their deck. While not choosing what land to tap can ruin the mind games, the game does know what cards you can still play and won't tap the lands required for that. So, basically, I don't have any problems with your complaints.

However, I do have one major complaint. Probably the funnest game mode in this game is the 2 headed giant mode. In this game type, you team up with a friend against 2 other people and you share health. The problem I have is in order to play this game type online, you and your firend have to play on the same xbox. There isn't anyway of linking up online and playing with eachother. This is retarded. Makes me so freaking mad. Why even bother putting it online, how many people are going to be playing 2 people to an xbox.

For 10 dollars I would still recommend it. Very fun game. Just wish they had spent some more time in the conceptual stages of their game development.

I'll just stick with my real decks and playing with my buddy when he is in town......casually. We usually have a blast just sitting around, shooting the shit, and playing. Went to a gaming shop on magic night and got destroyed numerous times.

My current decks are built extremely well for winning 1 on 1.....however, with 3 or more opponents......not so much. Spore counters can suck it! My black deck is the shizznite!

Thanks for the warning on this one.....I was really close to giving it a go.
