Forums - Gaming Discussion - 1:1 movement with the Wii

superchunk said: You've got to be joking right? Matt is a huge fanboy of Nintendo. I think the game still looks good and I will rent it first to see if it is my cup of tea. Matt did say that it was an overall good game if you like golf simulations. He said that if you like wii golf but have wanted a much deeper game then you will like Tiger 07.
Are you kidding me? Half of his reviews of Nintendo games could be paraphrased "I can't believe I'm playing a mario game ... I want Halo" ... His response to the Wii could be paraphrased to "I don't want the Wii I want an XBox 360" ... He is one of the most anti-Nintendo, Nintendo Editors on the entire internet... Peer-IGN was always the Nintendo Fanboy on the site...

Matt. C. is an oldschool Nintendo nerd: I remember seeing him on some Zelda retrospective on TV years back (when he weighed about twice what he does now from the look of it).

Yeah, which Matt are you thinking of? I can understand him criticizing plenty of Wii games, but he's clearly not a Nintendo hater.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Just played it for 4 hours. At first, it feels weird to pick up but now it seems more rewarding than i thought it would be. The real question in tiger is how the swing is calculated. Every other aspect of the game makes wii golf look really like just a tech demo. The Swing in Wii Golf: 1:1 movement and the back and down swing has no interference on speed. speed is just calculated on acceleration of the wiimote. The Swing in Tiger: 1:1 movement at the beginning of the back swing and all the downswing. What he doesn't count for is what you do between these two. you start the backswing and if you stop, the game player will go all the way back and wait for you to downswing. Speed is 90% calculated on the length of the backswing and 10% on the speed of the downswing (the power boost). This means that you don't have to use force as in wii golf, but instead as you play it more often you time your swing on the tempo of the animation making it much more easy to control the speed of the swing. it's not perfect... i think 60% / 40% speed calculation will be much more rewarding as you would have to use force to actually get big shots, but it's much more accurate than wii golf. oh, and you can draw in various degrees.

I havent played it, but from the sounds of it, tiger is doing a great job at using the Wiimote. I hate to say it, but a 90% (angle detection) and 10% (force) detection sounds best. This is a flaw in the chip. I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it more. The angle detection side of the chip is AMAZING. The accelerometer... sucks. If you put to much requirements on the acceleromoter... that is bad. As it is not sensitive enough.

Perhaps is just the habit of controlling all the speed that way on wii golf that makes me say that. What i can tell you is that, in no time, you really start swinging like a golfer and not with one drink in your left hand, in a strange position chiping like a pro. and that is very rewarding, besides all the courses and arcade games you can do with Tiger. for now, i would give it a personal 8/10

Alas it's not quite as good as that. The power isn't on angle, it's on timing. It's just a fancy way of waiting for a power bar to fill, except you don't even get to see the power bar. Your start pulling back the Wiimote. No matter what angle you stop it at, Tiger keeps swinging back until you move the Wiimote forward again. The power is calculated by how far Tiger moves back his club in the time it took you to do your swing, even if it's a tiny movement if it's slow enough you'll do full power. I agree about the tilt being much much better than the accelerometer as well. The pointer is really good when it's put to good use too, I'd love to see more innovative point-and-click games like Trauma Center.

Are we seriously talking about the waggle in Tiger Woods Wii? It's a fucking port, for christ sake.

That's right. When I said 90% backswing I was referring to Tiger's backswing. The only thing you control on the backswing is draw or fade. That makes you want to time your backswing with Tiger's so that you can control it without looking at the screen. That's why i think it makes you want to swing better. There are issues of course. I would prefer perhaps that my backswing was counted but than you could stop your arm for 5 seconds in the the air and than you would achieve full power anyway just by downswinging it. you don't stop your movement in the middle in real golf. I'm not a golfer and just started using golf games with wii, but perhaps a mix of both would be better. your backswing should count, but timing also. it's easy to calculate what is the time needed for the complete swing movement and the game should count your position and the time it took you from starting the backswing to the downswing for the power. say 60% your backswing, 30% time, 10% the downswing

The movement is great in Wii Sports haven't played Tiger but I might rent it. Red Steel is really sensitive but once you get use to it it's great. I really depends on the developer if the game turns out good or bad.
