Forums - Website Topics - How about a rep system for VGChartz?

I was thinking, and it seems like a good idea to me (although it might not to others) that a rep system would be good to have. For example, each user can give out up to 10 (or how ever many would be appropriate) rep points per day. Like how rep on the steam forums works.

It would be a good indicator of the quality of content from a user, and would not reward spamming like VG$ does. It would encourage useful and informative input. For example, someone who makes intelligent and well thought out threads would have more rep then someone who spams threads everyday with articles copy+pasted of other websites. Currently, apart from people who submit to the database, the people who have to most VG$ are the people who spam the most.

Of course, a rep system could also run in parallel to VG$... Anyway thats my idea... less insentive to spam, more insentive for good posts.

If you dont like it... why not? what are the disadvantages?

cheers.

Trolls would ruin your rep .. or anyone who disagreed with you basicly.

I was more thinking that you could only add rep, not take it away. So trolls would have less rep then respected posters

So... what stops Kirby007 to use all his alt accounts to give himself a rep of over 9000... :)

hmm... IP tracking, post minimum to give rep, only allowing a user to gave another user 1 rep per day, or per 3 days, or per week.

It would end up like N4G's bubble system.

ps3 owners will have lots of rep (lots of bubbles), 360 owners will have little/same rep. (hardly any bubbles)

It's a numbers game afterall.

A well-thought-out system which takes this forum's divisive nature into account would be an enomously useful addition to the site.

I was thinking something slightly different- a Karma system, like Allakhazam (ask Bodhesatva, he used to be a regular there- maybe he still is).

http://www.allakhazam.com

Basically, there are a few ranks: User, Scholar, Sage and Guru. Scholars and above can rate a post with a thumbs up or thumbs down. The post's Karma begins as Default, then can go down to Awful (or maybe it was Terrible, can't remember). It can also go up to Decent, Good and Excellent. Each classification of post gives you a Karma score. This score is averaged out. To quote the Site FAQ:

Q: I see posters rated as Scholar, Sage and Guru. What's up with that and how do I get a
title?

A: That is part of the Karma system. Your Karma rating is determined by averaging every rating your posts have received from the users of the site. The rating comes from posts made under your registered name on any of the rated forums for any game covered by allakhazam.com, but does not include posts on user journals. You must have at least 15 posts before you receive a Karma rating. Then any future post you make will start out at your Karma level. Anonymous posts start at a rating of 2. Titles are assigned to your posts according to the following scale:

Karma below 3 = user. Posts are in orange.
Karma between 3.01 and 3.65 = scholar. Posts are in light blue.
Karma between 3.66 and 4.34 = sage. Posts are in green.
Karma between 4.35 and 5 = guru. Posts are in red.
Administrators posts are in maroon.

Q: What are the karma ratings?

A: Excellent = 5.0
Good = 4.0
Decent = 3.0
Default = 2.0
Awful = 1.0

Now, we shouldn't copy this exactly, but it's a good foundation.
