Forums - Gaming - I think Lightning is the worst character name of all time.

I have no problem with Lightning much like I had no problem with Cloud. Maybe the name sounds cooler in Japanese or is not as lame. Names get lost in translation.

Around the Network

people complain about anything seriously

After names like Cloud......lightning sounds better

the name gives a better personality, it personifies, strength, agility, power & independance

thats what the character is meant to be like

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

One thing you have to consider is that they do that (names from random nouns) a lot more in Japanese. Ichigo (Bleach) means strawberry. They also think its epicly cool to give people English words as names. Whichever way they went, it's totally a Japanese thing.

Am I the only one who thinks a character named Danger would be awsome?

You guys need to take this shit less seriously, really. It doesn't sound as lame to japanese people cuz english is ot their first language.

And FYI, Terra isn't even her original name, it's Tina. See, Tina is an exotic name in japanese, but it's a common one in the english language, so they decided to change it. It actually means "Earth" in my language.

Quem disse que a boca é tua?

Qual é, Dadinho...?

Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!

Isn't Terra latin for Earth? Or was that Tellus? What about Gaia? Well I don't really know...

Also Cloud > Lightning

but Lightning > Snow

Oh yeah, Lightning's definitely cliche, dull, unimaginative and just plain bad. But the worst?

TRAIN HEARTNET.

I rest my case.

I mean, holy shit. What is Square Enix thinking? Names like that were cool when I was, I don't know, eleven years old? This is seriously even worse than "Edge Maverick". What are the other characters going to be named? Blade, Danger, and Bolt? I have never seen a name that has so simultaneously tried to be cool and yet utterly failed so miserably.

The implication this naming decision makes about the creative energies behind the game is so dire that it has cast my entire faith in Final Fantasy XIII in doubt. I thought this was going to just be a code name, but all indications recently point towards it not being one (or at least not for functional, widely used purposes.)

Seriously, WHY? Do they have THAT low of an opinion of Final Fantasy fans' intelligence and good taste? Even if the rest of the game is as incredible as it could possibly be, this will be the one turd that accidentally got mixed into the batter; no matter what it's going to make the entire cake taste a little like shit.

NEWS FLASH

VIDEO GAMES DID NOT MATURE WITH YOU.

More than half of all 'hardcore' gamers are under the age of 16.

And yes, they have THAT low opinion of a FF Fan's intelligence and good taste. FF Fans loved "Cloud" who moped all the time and had a plot that made not a lick of sense. They loved "Squall" whose job was to defeat a random evil witch who was trying to 'compress time' for some goddamn reason and forgot that every person in the party he was friends with as a toddler. They loved "Tight-ass" who dressed like a hot-topic goth with a mesh shirt and one pant leg for some reason. They're going to love 'Lightning' who looks and acts more or less exactly like a gay porn star fighting ridiculous space dragons.

Thanks for stating the obvious, the over-the-top rage really drove the point home. Funny thing is, 6, 9, and 12, acclaimed by many fans as the best, do NOT feature the infantile nomenclature you noted above. And with 12 being the most recent and the interesting vibe I've gotten from the game's graphical style and plot, I was just hoping the rest would follow suit. Maybe it will. Doesn't stop Lightning from being so, SO much worse than Cloud, Squall, Tidus, or any other example you care to bring forth.

@Okey: You're the kid who always failed the reading comprehension tests because you just skipped the reading and guessed, aren't you?

FF12 isn't acclaimed by many people to be the best. In fact, a lot of people hate it.

I liked it. I think the reason some people hated it is because it didn't have that " true Final fantasy love story" that some of the others had.

I doubt names have anything to do with game results. "Master Chief" isn't exactly a name but that doesn't stop Halo from selling millions :p

Master Chief was his rank, not his name.
