Forums - Sony - PSP Go! getting an App Store?

http://kotaku.com/5288956/pspgo-getting-an-app-store

"The App Store is probably the single best thing about the iPhone. All those useful things collected in one spot where they're easily accessible? Handy. Might Sony, then, be looking to open an App Store of their own?

"Sources close to game development" have told Destructoid that Sony will be unveiling just that at this year's Games Con in Germany. This new element to the PSPgo shopfront will feature "smaller, 'non-retail' games and applications", which will be priced at roughly $2-$6 and must come in at under 100MB.

Such a move wouldn't surprise me, and wouldn't surprise you either. The PSPgo would easily support smaller digital titles, while Sony have long been dabbling with non-gaming applications for the handheld, releasing everything from PSP translators to street maps."

This would certainly make the PSP Go! more attractive, and help justify the price a little more. I just hope it gets some useful applications in there, if it's even real.

interesting, but I doubt they will alienate 50 million people & not get this app store out on PSP 3000 too

I don't think it will be much an issue actually. These are small applications that wont necessarily have to sell a lot to make a profit of some kind, and if Sony can make this another reason for the consumer to choose the highly profitable PSP Go! over the 3000, then I think they will.

They said the calendar and clock applications weren't coming to the 3000 either, so I think this is quite likely.

Well the key with the iPhone aplications is that they are so accessible to everyone. If they included an accelerometer and touch screen, then this could be just used a cheaper iPod touch, with the proper gaming a bonus

The App store does not provide great games for proper gamers, so with the traditional controls remaining, it might not be that big of a hit

Well, there is a lot of crap on the App Store, which is just there to show an idea of what can be done with the iPod, and since the PSP doesn't have that same appeal, I think there might be a higher concentration of "useful" things on a PSP App store, like calculators, social network applications etc.

Could work well if used right. Could see a msn application and stuff work well.

by msn i mean one designed to work with your msn account but by random ppls :p

Check out my game about moles ^

Interesting. The only thing I'm worried about though is buying a 16GB Go and then SONY releasing a 32GB Go, 3 months later...

So am I, but I can get a 16gb M2 for £20, so I'm not that worried

If Sony does not do this then they are extreamly stupid. I think that Little Big Planet proved just how much talent is out there in the Playstation community just waiting for Sony to let them bring it to the platform. Also why not let the hackers work for you instead of against you? Just think about all the great apps that have already been created for the PSP for custom firmware. If Sony would allow those guys to put that stuff in a place were it could be used without compromising the system then it should be one of their top priorities.

One Thing that I would really like for Sony to do if they end up going down this path is bringing a bit more testing than what Apple does. It is nice that the App store has so much stuff, but thanks to everything going through you end up with a lot of software that flat does not work. If Sony keeps a good eye on the apps, they could come away with a much better experinace that is much less confiusing to the end user.

When Jack said that they had slashed the cost of dev kits by 80% this was the first thing that came to mind. They have to be going after the guys making games for DS and iPhone.
