Forums - Nintendo - If the Next Nintendo Console is Like the Wii...

Actually it's quite possible Nintendo will have the most powerful console next gen (slightly though most likely), simply because they could launch a Wii 2 in 2011 or so, I think Sony and Microsoft have no intention of launching another console any time soon. They've lost too much money and will want to recoup it banking on these new motion controllers extended their console's life span.

...Do you think it will do poorly?

My reasoning for why it will perform under par of the Wii is that motion control won't be as much of a selling point since all 3 console manufacturers will have it by that time and people will eventually want to upgrade to HD graphics once they finally purchase a shiny new TV. People who have played Wii on an HDTV even with component cables knows that games look very bland with a lot of jaggies. As HD whores and technophiles become more common with the newer generations of gamers, people will start to demand "cooler" consoles. The Wii has been branded as "kiddy" many times over and this stigma will only get worse over time.

Motion control is huge at the moment, and is the reason why many people (including myself...er my mom) bought the Wii in the first place. We are looking for that fresh, new experience that has never been fully implemented in past generations of consoles. By taking away this wow factor, Microsoft and Sony will be able to level the playing field and this will be less of a selling point than it is now for the Wii. Sure the implementation will differ between consoles, but the general idea will be the same.

Price is another factor as to why the Wii is doing well. Launched, and still at, $250 makes the Wii the cheapest current gen console still excluding the 360 Arcade ($199). Parents who aren't able to afford big electronics purchases at the moment due to the economic crises will go out shopping for little Jill and Johnny for Christmas or their birthday, see the $300-500 price of the competing systems, and grab the Wii instead simply because its more affordable and is still a game console. I have a feeling Microsoft, and especially Sony, have learned that no console sells very well at a price higher than $299 and will adjust launch prices of their next consoles accordingly to combat this.

So if Nintendo sticks to its current path of non-HD, motion control gaming, do you think their next console will stumble out of the gate?

What an...interesting take on reality.

Sony andMicrosoft playing "me too" is not going to steal much thunder from the Wii. Nintendo has more experience with motion controls than either MS or Sony and judging by E3, they may be the only ones to pull it off competently. But it's not just about the motion controls, it's about the software. Wii Sports sold the Wii. I can't imagine what Sony would pull and Microsoft's ideas would be novel at best judging by their presentations.

The Wii successor is going to have HD, Iwata already confirmed this. And Nintendo has been labeled "kiddy" since Sony couldn't come up with anything better in 90's, it hasn't hurt their sales then and it's certainly not hurting them now. I'm sure "HD" and "mature" are one and the same in anti-Nintendoland but in the real world, there is no correlation or logic to support that. There have always been graphics whores, and they are labeled as such because they are always the minority. Graphics does not win a console war, it never has. As long as video games remain as experiences meant to be played, this will remain true.

And you can drop this super macho act, bragging about how you "don't care" about the Wii and how it's for your mom. I'm not sure what gave you the impression that we would be impressed by such a reckless attitude but you can stop overcompensating for down there, it's only hurting your argument.

Please don't make me lose respect for you. I'm telling the truth.

We bought my mom a Wii for mother's day (you can find it in my post history if you'd like) along with Wii Fit.

I'm not looking to impress anyone here as I won't know you in reality. And I don't need to "compensate" down there. Trust me, people here have seen what I pack ;)

start browsing for good Wii games then, there are actually a lot of them, and if there is a Wii in your house and you claim you are a gamer, not playing Galaxy is a crime.

I really need to get Galaxy and Brawl, but I'm a broke college student who needs to buy a laptop for school first. Maybe eventually itll happen...

Nintendo would be foolish to have a tiny hardware upgrade like Gamecube-Wii.

If I remember correctly the reason the Wii wasn't very powerful was because it was a risk, they didn't know if motion would take off.

If Nintendo releases a console next generation that isn't a significant leap over PS3 / 360, they will probably be in 3rd party trouble again and no one will want to develop for the system with "crappy ps3 graphics" Like we are seeing today, which is sickening.

Nintendo will keep a low price point under $300, and will have a controller similar to Wii with motion + only much more refined. It will not take off as fast as the Wii and will likely not outsell it (gonna be hard for anyone to top the Wii's success)., but if Nintendo plays their cards right they can easily get 1st place again.

Thank you for your logical, unbiased reply (not sarcasm I'm serious).

You sir deserve a cookie. :D

oh man, I can already picture it, a Nintendo console that can at least rival the power of the PS3 with full BC to Wii and GCN games on top of finally able to do shaders with matured motion controls, that'd be so sweet.....

edit: and under 300 bucks =P

Off TOpic: I've always been curious as to why people need laptops for college.

I'm going into my thrid year and outside of the occasional paper i right (which i do on my desktop anyway) I have no use for one.

Unless of course you plan to game in your classes.

Its required for UCs. Professors hand out assignments online and you have to e-mail the completed work back to them (all in the classroom. Tests, quizzes, assignments). If you don't have your own laptop you're out $5000 for the quarter 'cause you'll fail.

they already said their next console is HD

also, Nintendo and their games have became too popular now with Wii and Ds, even if Europe

i think if they don't do some shit with their next console they'll win again, just because of their great games, like Galaxy, Smash, Mario Kart..... and if this time graphics are closer to the other consoles and they get 3rd party support and GTA, nothing will stop them

maybe they find something else in their next console, maybe motion plus for nunckuk combined with Natal concept, or something completely new, who knows

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^
