I said unexpected for two reasons.
1.- It's not a big budget sequel to some high profile franchise.
2.- It´s on a handheld

SC:C definitely deserves it more than Alan Wake. I mean, I'm sure Alan Wake will be good, but what they've shown wasn't all that imipressive (other than the graphics). Ohhh, so you have to shine a flashlight on people before you can shoot them. Meanwhile, SC:C shows off a BADASS targetting system that allows you to pull off some crazy maneuvers that were previously only possible in cutscenes. The Alan Wake demo was lame in comparison.

You do know that Alan Wake is a survival horror game, right? And for a survival horror enthusiast, it looked like ecstacy. Needless to say, SC:C totally did look badass. But I'm one of those Resi 4, Condemned, Silent Hill fans. Oh, and I've played every SC game except Chaos Theory.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Yes I know it's survival horror. And it looks good. But it doesn't really add anything NEW to the whole genre. All in all, it looks like pretty standard survival horror fare. Scary atmosphere. Limited ammo. Supernatural elements. I think Splinter Cell's targetting mechanics are much more innovative and game changing than having to shine a flashlight at people before shooting them.
It's not really surprising, Scribblenauts looks damned amazing. It's a toss-up between that one and Uncharted 2 for me as the best game of E3, both games had pretty amazing shows

Mass Effect 2 got best RPG of E3 again. What are you talking about?

Alan Wake's innovations are more in the story telling then anything else. In game dynamic story narration and a feature set to make it seem like an episodic movie. Interestingly enough though, both Alan Wake and SC:C feature objectives or messages written on walls that only you as the player could see. I'm not debating that SC:C looks to innovate the stealth genre in fantastic ways, but Alan Wake is innovative in its own right, including having the environment be your number 1 enemy and your 2nd best ally throughout the game. And you don't just blast holes until its dead like other horror games.
I personally think what makes Alan Wake so special, judging from the gameplay is how it looks to perfect normal Survival Horror traits as best it can more then just invent new ones entirely. Though it seems to do that too, but not to the extent SC:C is doing it to the stealth genre.

Uhhh scribblenauts? Never even heard of that. Portable games shouldn't win competitions like this.
Scribblenauts sounds ridiculous, and I mean that in an excited good way.
