Forums - Gaming - remember when controllers weren't $50? (part 2)

The price of the controllers is way to high. Shouldn't the 360 controller be a lot cheaper than the DS3 or the wii mote & nunchuck? There is no motion control of any kind, yet all the local retailers in my area sell the DS3 at $45 and the 360 controler at $45 and the wii mote and nunchuck combined at $60.

Sony, MS & Nintendo should put at least two controllers with every console sold, instead of just one.

lol.

I had the same epiphany with the N64. Mostly because it was the first console that came standard with 4 controller ports, but it was $90 to get an additional 3 controllers!

i ended up buying 7 controllers for the N64 because of how frail that joystick was. IDK who came up with the idea to make a joystick 1/5 of an inch thick -.- I had 3 snap right off. That generation cost me the most because of replacements.

If we're going to include all the main options for control, then you're going to have to add in the price of Natal, the PSEye, and all those Wands you're going to need.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

I went through several N64 controllers, too. The problem I had was that after playing with them for so long, the analog stick would get loose and it either didn't feel right or the neutral point would be wrong.  But to actually snap it off!?!?!  What the hell were you doing!?!?!

Wow you suck at shopping

Wii Motion+ is $20 not $25, and you get one free when you buy Wii Sports Resort (or a few other games)
1 classic controller is enough, you don't need multiple. I got mine free with a game.
You get a free remote when you buy Wii Play, which any self respecting gamer should do.

Compare this to the GC, which had no way to get controllers for cheaper (unless you bought knock offs, but then you missed out on the most comfortable controller ever)

Price of 3 motes, 3 chuks, 3 WM+, 1 classic controller, Wii Play and WSR = 80 + 60 + 40 + 20 + 50 + 50
= $300

Price of 3 wavebird controllers, and 2 games of as high quality as Wii Play and WSR, and a memory card for $25

=$275
Adjust for the approx 5 years between releases at 5% inflation.
= $275*1.05^5
= $351

How is it that the one gen in which there was such an amazing leap in technology over previous controllers, that prices actually decreased? Amazing

Oh, and steven787, you're an even worse shopper (or an even worse troll) than the OP. Don't buy a recharge kit. For $15 AU (ie about $8 US you can get a battery charger with 4 AA batteries) Then a few dollars for 4 more batteries. But why am I even telling you this, surely everyone owns a AA battery charger? If you actually buy non rechargeable batteries then I hereby forbid you to ever bitch about the price of anything until you buy a battery charger

I got two Radio Shack N64 controllers and instead of all plastic on the analog stick they have a metal shaft.  They were also see through.  Probably the only 3rd party controller that I thought was a major improvement over the first party.

@scottie

The $25 price is what is listed at gamestop (as others have posted) and that was what I was referring to.

If you still want to play, say, mario kart 64 or other 4 player n64 games, you need more then one controller.

Also, getting a free wiimote with wii play? Wii play is a $20 tech demo at best. At $50, you're maybe saving $5 on the purchase of a game and $5 on the purchase of a controller.

you also forgot to add in the 4th motion + since one does not come bundled with the system.

Tastyshovelware, you have to add in the cost of recharge kits for Wii and 360; also include the cost of a usb cable beacuse the $55 dualshock 3's don't come with one (the original one in the box comes with one but not the extras).

Not exactly true.  I already had an Energizer charger and plenty of rechargeable AAs (granted I had to rebuy some AAs since they went bad after a few years) since GCN era since I had 4 wavebirds.  So some people might already have that, but probably not as many as there should be.  I think more people should go rechargeable.  It is cheaper in the long run and helps save the environment.  I suppose some people are just too lazy.

@Scottie: Everyone threw out their battery chargers as soon as it was learnt that the PS3 included a lithium ion battery.

Tease.

And gamestop are selling it $5 above the recommended retail price. As I said, you aren't very good at shopping.

Ok, I'll add in the cost required to play multiplayer of all the VC games.

Wii - price added is the price of 3 classic controllers
GC - price added is the price of a N64, 4 N64 controllers, a Snes, 2 snes controllers, a Nes, 2 nes controllers, a Genesis, 2 genesis controllers, a Master System, 2 master system controllers, a turbografx, 4? turbografx contrrolers, a neo geo, and some neo geo controllers, several arcade machines (ie a few thousand each), a commadore 64 and whatever you use to control it. Total price would certainly be over $5000

Your move

You don't own Wii Play, I do. I'm telling you I have put over a hundred very enjoyable hours into that game. Tanks is my favourite. The multiplayer in it is solid - co-op to a degree, but prone to sneaky backstabs to steal points. I think I'm gonna play it when I get back home.
