I had the same epiphany with the N64. Mostly because it was the first console that came standard with 4 controller ports, but it was $90 to get an additional 3 controllers!

i ended up buying 7 controllers for the N64 because of how frail that joystick was. IDK who came up with the idea to make a joystick 1/5 of an inch thick -.- I had 3 snap right off. That generation cost me the most because of replacements.

I got two Radio Shack N64 controllers and instead of all plastic on the analog stick they have a metal shaft.  They were also see through.  Probably the only 3rd party controller that I thought was a major improvement over the first party.
