I had the same epiphany with the N64. Mostly because it was the first console that came standard with 4 controller ports, but it was $90 to get an additional 3 controllers!

i ended up buying 7 controllers for the N64 because of how frail that joystick was. IDK who came up with the idea to make a joystick 1/5 of an inch thick -.- I had 3 snap right off. That generation cost me the most because of replacements.

I went through several N64 controllers, too. The problem I had was that after playing with them for so long, the analog stick would get loose and it either didn't feel right or the neutral point would be wrong.  But to actually snap it off!?!?!  What the hell were you doing!?!?!
