A lot of you are missing the forest for the trees here... Malstrom is pointing out that Mario Galaxy didn't live up to the full expectations of Nintendo, in that it didn't drive hardware sales in the same way that the other evergreen titles did (Wii Fit, Mario Kart, etc.) Neither did Mario Sunshine for the Gamecube... but New Super Mario Brothers (and Super Mario Advance/Land) did for the portables. That's where he gets the 2D/3D mario argument. Yes, Mario Galaxy sold 8m units of software, but it was still a relative failure in that sense.
Here's a good similar example: Little Big Planet and Resistance 2 for the PS3. These games each sold well in the marketplace, turned big profits for Sony, etc. However, they were relative failures for Sony, because they were supposed to be the big holiday games for the PS3 and didn't end up moving a lot of hardware. (And we all know how that turned out - PS3 took a major beating.) So again, yes, Mario Galaxy was a relative failure because it didn't have the long-term impact Nintendo wanted. This has nothing to do with the quality of the game itself either - I thought Galaxy was excellent.
I don't have anything else to add, noname already typed some outstanding posts earlier.
End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)
