I have been having some issues as well.
From my research and personal experience with Bioshock, and a friends 360, I believe the following may be happening:

Try to load Halo or whatever without the hard drive attached to the console.
If it works fine then this is your problem:

With these newer games the memory cache can become corrupted, and if you clear the permanent memory cache, as well as the temporary cache- things should work.
(all this will do is erase your software updates, not your game saves)
1) Access "memory" in the system blade of the 360 menus
2) Highlight the hard drive (dont select it, just highlight it)
3) Enter the following as if it is a cheat code: Y,X,X,LB,RB,X,X
4) It will say "would you like to perform system maintenance?" - Say Yes
The above will delete your cache
Now load 3 games other than the game you are having problems with, to wipe out your temporary cache, (load the game saves of each game)

This worked for me, if you couldn't get the code to work, just search for how to delete the cache on the 360

Not to come off as "ZOMFG flame flame flame", but seriously I'm never owning a 360 if this is the kind of crap I have to deal with. This is worse than fixing a computer.

Well, shocking... An MS licensed product with a flaw.
In other news; men all over the globe are now concerned with what appears to be HAIR GROWING ON THEIR FACE!! Nasty bizniz.

Lol, just kidding. Still, not surprised!

To fix PS2 disk read errors, you have to take the system apart and clean the lens.....

EDIT: BTW, not trying to flame you or anything, just remembering having to do this, and noticed the PS2 stuff in your sig, IMO, it's totally worth it for both systems.

Currently Playing:  Saints Row 2 | Battlefield 2 | Company of Heroes

Recently Beaten: Gears of War | Super Mario Galaxy | Darwinia | MGS4 | Sam and Max Ep. 4, Portal | Mirror's Edge | Uncharted | Mass Effect

Looking Forward to: Alan Wake | Splinter Cell : Conviction | The Last Guardian | Batman: Arkham Asylum | SMG2 | Mass Effect 2 |

But I don't like the PS2 either, I think its about just as bad as the 360 in many of these regards. I, like many, only play the PS2 because of the game selection, not my love for its efficiency as a gaming system (I also don't remember the PS2 ever having memory cache problems like this, or requiring such problem shooting methods for fixing them, but that's besides the point).

I've never made excuses for the PS2 nor do i think it is a great system, and by god I'm not investing in quality control equivalent of the "PS2" this generation if I can help it. The 360 has some fantastic games, but not enough to force people to play it like the PS2 did.

Obviously alot of people are fine with the 360, everyone has thier limit to what they'll accept, I guess I'm just picky.

I use this all the time to take patches off of my games. It came in handy when they patched the dupe trick in Oblivion! :)

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

I've seen one returned in the "non-working Device" bin. (Or something like that) It was at my local Target on Wednesday.

I am Daemon. I am the Word.

It's either own a system with a three year warranty. Or a cheap blue ray player.

Yeah. I've had my PS3 for almost a year and I leave it on for sometimes 10 hours at a time. It works like it's brand new. Better than new, in fact, considering my firmware upgrades. Frankly, if something I used all the time needed a three year extended warranty, I wouldn't buy it.

Or just buy a Wii and save yourself the trouble.
