I reckon it's damage control, they'll come off looking stupid if they admitted to making a mistake by not developing for the PS3, so they came up with this story and of course the PS3 is an easy scape goat. |
Your conclusion does not follow from them creating an engine. They didn't make an engine to satisfy some tech fetish. They did it to make development more affordable by reusing their engine, and to allow their game developers more flexibility. If you listen to the developer commentary in Portal, they had to make a lot of changes to the engine to handle the portals, surely that would have been harder if they did it with an unfamiliar 3rd party engine.
Yes, Valve has technically capable developers who are perfectly capable of handling the tech behind games. No, that's not the main focus of Valve as a whole, their main focus is to create good games.

I don't think it's really the dev kits. In the end Valve are sitting on their own, self developed engine platform, Source. They release all their titles on it and upgrade it over time, so that while it does look older now its overall feature set remains impressive and from a PC point of view it will play very well, and with good graphics, on ridiculously low end PCs. Source is easy to stick on 360. Source is not easy to put on PS3 and would need changed to work well on it. It's as simple as that. It wasn't anything deliberate, well, maybe 360 design being easy for PC developers was deliberate I guess... whatver, for Valve 360 is an easy source of revenue (sorry for the pun) that takes minimal additional effort. Look at the EA port of Source, etc. for The Orange Box - it's okayish but by no means great, and remember this is an engine that would normally run well on PC's with far less power than a PS3, and with more processes, etc. running to boot. Clearly, Source would need a major overhaul to work really well on PS3, and clearly Valve don't want to make that effort. If Valve do support PS3 I suspect it will be further down the road during an engine overhaul, when it would make more sense to ensure the engine could support PS3. Mind you, they might just ignore the PS3 completely right through the gen. Would I prefer them to support PS3? Sure, but then I'm not big on exclusives unless true 1st party. But it is their choice in the end and their business.

100% agreement. the very fact that most likely valve does not have the man power with "The Experience" of developing for the PS3 and right now the cost in putting the resources toward development of the PS3 would not be wise for "them". which is in my opinion nothing wrong with that. Take the fact they are more in their realm of development experience with PC. and there was some learning curve with development for the xbox360 but with the PS3 the Engine itself would have to be redone inorder to take advantage of the PS3 design, which take's time and money and since they have time table's for their existing projects there is that snag also.
I am glad they are doing what is best for their company. That does not mean they are lazy "well at least they would not admit it":D, but it just mean's they have other reason's for going the way they are and they may not want to into all of the reason's. some of which would cause them more trouble than they would like, Example:
thousand's of fan's sending them Email's and them sending out a response taking their time away from making games'
:D

I completely agree but their reasoning every time they are asked "if any PS3 games are coming our way?" is just BS and should not be hyped by the media.

I just think the Valve developers are MS fanboys and choose not to make Wii or PS3 games.... Theres nothing wrong with developers having a console preference. Guerilla Games and Sucker Punch prefer PS3 because they say their games are not possible on 360... Similarly, Valve chooses to stick with 360 and PC because the PS3 is too complex for them.... and thats okay.

i don't think it should be blamed on VALVE as much as the Media itself. I think the Media is for the Most part the culprit most of the time, because they tend to blow thing's way out of preportion for the most part. take a tiny thing and make a big deal out of it just to attract more reader's.. though that's what they are in the industry for so you or i could very well fault them but they are doing their Job.
, i mean a prime example of this is:
such and such system "stole" another exclusive..
you cannot steal something "if you can still play the game on a system" if your system still get's the game nothing was stolen.
it just mean's other's get to play it also without needing the same system as you . No biggie In my Opinion , if i have fun playing the game that's all that matter's. atleast for me it does.

I think that blog totally misunderstood what Newell meant by bandwidth. He was obviously talking about lack of staff, using bandwidth figuratively.
Either that or there's something I'm not catching here...

Who wants to put in the face palm picture?
The fanboys around here make me sick some days. Valve is one of the most talented developers in the world and they're a relatively small company that doesn't produce many games. They've made a business decision here, plain and simple.
There are three options:
1. Increase staff size and port to PS3. This would require additional work from their current staff and apparently they feel it's either not necessary or counter-intuitive to their business plan.
2. Send the port off to another company and risk brand embarrassment over a crappy port. See Orange Box on PS3 if you want to see how well that model worked for them.
3. Keep their business size at a level comfortable to them and use their assets in the most profitable ways possible and with the hardware that they feel keeps them the most focused creatively.
What would you do if you were in their shoes? I can hardly fault a smaller company for limiting the scope of their projects.
But, then again, I think Insomniac is a crap developer because they don't port to the 360. And that Kojima is lazy because he didn't port MGS4 to the Wii.
