Forums - Sony - Valve shuts out "Too Complicated" PS3

Well, I thought I would get into the spirit of this thread in general.

EDIT:  Or here is a question for the folks so heavily into this:  Is what bothers you more that Valve doesn't put games on PS3, or that that trash talk about not putting games on the PS3?  If it is the former, then you have problems.  If it is the latter, then I see your point.  I would still rather see this thread ride off into the sunset.

Just to clarify a misconception that I see being spewed out every few threads. PS3 is NOT deliberately made hard to code for. It is just different than a normal PC.

I think Kaz would disagree with you.

Actually, EA went out of their way to get the game on the Ps3.

Yes, EA...  Famed for their care in porting games to PS3.

Valve didn't fail the PS3, the PS3 failed Valve.  The PS3...  failed...  YOU.

LOL I have a PC if you would have read this thread you would know. And yes... EA is all about porting games to every system and get as much money as they can.

I`ve never cared about valve, and certainly won`t care for them for beeing lazy. Games for me are a form of art, and those who not put HARD work in development won`t get my attention.

His actual words are as follows.

"It's not easy to program for the PS3. I wouldn't say it's endless in terms of what the console can do, but we pack so much depth into our consoles that it takes a while for anybody, including first party studios, to really harness the power," he said.

"We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years?" he said.

It is always a decision between making a powerful device and making a simple to use device, he explained that they went with making a powerful device with the added benefit that overtime people will make better and better games as they understand it more and more. This is NOT going to be what they make the decision on.

I assure you "Lets make a completely un-usable architecture so that people have difficulty programming for it" is not the way any company makes decisions.

His second quote which the journalist is making his report on seems more after thought than any actual reason.

Whether it's an excuse or not, Sony should simply release dev tools that totally void additional complexity as an acceptable excuse.

@Alby
No. they shouldn't.

Valve ain't feel that is worth the work for doing, they prefer to focus in PC and then make a good port to the PS3 than spending time and money in the PS3. You can't compare them with SE, Capcom, Ubisoft etc etc, why? Because They are mainly Console publisher, so they have to do it for most if not all the consoles, Valve on the other hand is mainly a PC, the X360 is just a plus, they wouldn't do if it wasn't so easy to port from PC to it.

I don't think it's really the dev kits.  In the end Valve are sitting on their own, self developed engine platform, Source.  They release all their titles on it and upgrade it over time, so that while it does look older now its overall feature set remains impressive and from a PC point of view it will play very well, and with good graphics, on ridiculously low end PCs.

Source is easy to stick on 360.  Source is not easy to put on PS3 and would need changed to work well on it.  It's as simple as that.  It wasn't anything deliberate, well, maybe 360 design being easy for PC developers was deliberate I guess... whatver, for Valve 360 is an easy source of revenue (sorry for the pun) that takes minimal additional effort.

Look at the EA port of Source, etc. for The Orange Box - it's okayish but by no means great, and remember this is an engine that would normally run well on PC's with far less power than a PS3, and with more processes, etc. running to boot.  Clearly, Source would need a major overhaul to work really well on PS3, and clearly Valve don't want to make that effort.

If Valve do support PS3 I suspect it will be further down the road during an engine overhaul, when it would make more sense to ensure the engine could support PS3.  Mind you, they might just ignore the PS3 completely right through the gen.

Would I prefer them to support PS3?  Sure, but then I'm not big on exclusives unless true 1st party.  But it is their choice in the end and their business.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
