Forums - Gaming - Is Metal Gear Solid even a game series?

A few days ago, I was watching a livestream of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.  I started watching from when Snake was talking to this one guy and told Snake to call him Zero.  It looked interesting and I was incredibly bored so I watched the stream all the way to.. THE PAIN!!!! and Hornet Grenades.  I have to say this.. the cinematics seems to be the main movitation for playing.. and the one with Eva and Snake in the cabin made cringe heavily.

Point is.. the main movitation for playing are these pretentious cutscenes?  Is taking out enemies and bosses in the game just glorified pressing  the play button?  Is the rest of the series like this?  Is Metal Gear Solid just a series of movies with gameplay?

no, every metal gear solid had unique gameplay elements...granted there are a bunch of cutscenes but they are a means of explaining it's awesome story...this game redefined stealth action, from mgs1 to mgs4...so no, it's not just a movie with gameplay, or as some like to call it, an interactive movie...mgs is a full on game with a bunch of cutscenes

If you think MGS3 was bad on that point, stay the hell away from MGS4.

Honestly, the main draw of MGS is the story. There's also some stealth/camoflague gameplay that draws some in, but for me it was the story. I hated the story of MGS4, so for me the series ended with the best game in the series, MGS3.

But yeah, it's extremely cutscene-heavy.

Ugh, just play the first one before complaining about THE WHOLE series.

But yes, it's a mix between cut scenes and very solid gameplay.

If you mean cutscenes as means of story progression, then you'd have more of an argument. But no, it's not just that. The Pain is in fact pretty lame, but The End, a later boss in the game, is one of the most well executed boss battles I have ever seen.

MGS is just as much a movie as it is a game.

The story and cutscenes are one of the main draws, but that's not to say it doesn't also have fantastic gameplay.

I found the story in MGS4 the best in the series easily. Same goes for the gameplay.

Anyway, TC, MGS series are not cut from the same mold, they are different, unlike anything in the medium. A MGS game is about the sum of it's parts, about the overall experience, and before you know it you are dying to try the next gadget and apply a different tactic to the next area and to find out what the story has in store for you next.

Of course, there is a chance that the game(s) will not appeal to you and that's the end of it.

i agree with you on this

its my reason for liking splinter cell more

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.
