I found the story in MGS4 the best in the series easily. Same goes for the gameplay.
Anyway, TC, MGS series are not cut from the same mold, they are different, unlike anything in the medium. A MGS game is about the sum of it's parts, about the overall experience, and before you know it you are dying to try the next gadget and apply a different tactic to the next area and to find out what the story has in store for you next.
Of course, there is a chance that the game(s) will not appeal to you and that's the end of it.
