Forums - Nintendo - if Nintendo had shown Natal instead...

This is exactly why I feel Natal will be a disaster. Your already thinking of UNLIMITED possibilities when infact there a limitations. The biggest being SPACE. I don't know you, but my living room has a VERY SMALL space. So all that movement we saw on stage at E3 by that girl simply would nto be possible in most peoples homes. The Wii Remote has the same problem, all developers thought they MUST use motion waggle controls and alot of games have been ruined because of it. Sometimes less is more.I think Natal will be better off if people did consider it having limitations, that way they can use it more smartly. You said "switch weapons say so, crouch say cover etc.." honestly who really wants to be talking out loud all these commands? To me that will feel like a war manager game (like the football manager game, where you don't play but manage players lol) instead of interactive game I am playing in as a character.I would feel like I am commanding a soldier to do things not me doing them in simplest terms.

i agree, speaking loud to the tv and requiring a lot of space is a limitation, people have tables in front of the tv, not just a sofa

i personally need to move a table when playing Wii Fit, imagine with Natal...

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

I'm so glad none of you guys are game developers thinking of new and refreshing ideas for Natal, all your doing is thinking of barriers, it's pathetic. By looking at all the hate and rage Natal is getting now its blatant a lot of Nintendo fans are starting to get worried.

You have to think about barriers.

Look what happened to a shitload of Wii games. Everyone just decided to program motion controls for the games without considering that traditional may work better.

some examples: madden, mortal kombat, and wwe games.

So for Natal as cool as it is SPACE (just liek Wii Fit) is a BIG ISSUE.

@Ironman: What you fail to grasp here is, that firstly, the more sophistication you add to the system, the more limitations you set to the gamer, as well as developer. And by sophistication, i don't mean adding features, but adding precision.
Secondly, looking at how well the developers grasp Wiis controls, a console with largest installbase and cheapest to develope for, it's unlikely that the devs grasp Natal any better. What we end up having, is a game, with standard controller, you comfortably play on your couch, with a random "waggle" on screen to annoy you. The excact same thing that all the gamers complain about.

If you look at Eyetoy, there's quite a number of games that support it on PS2, but none that actually makes good use of it in it's gameplay, outside Eyetoy specific games.

if they had showed the exact same thing as microsoft, people would still be impressed, more so because Nintendo isn't one to push such advanced expensive tech as what was shown, I know all will cite the wiimote, but the wiimote it's self was composed from cheap available tech at the time, they just had a nice package and a good interface, anyways the whole natal project had quite abit of research behind it.

In any case I see the natal project being the next gimmick to draw the rest of the casuals that still have troubles or disconnect of havbing something in there hands to control something on screen, however, instead of being announced by Nintendo, it was announced by Microsoft so Kudos to them.

All I have to say, is that if Microsoft have this camera + standard controls in the box with their next console, Nintendo have no chance as the wiimote would been seen as old...and at this stage I don't see Nintendo doing something that can surpass natal, unless of course it's something like the matrix...

@OP - You seem to be implying that there aren't any/many Wii fans around here (either that or you don't think Wii fans are gamers O_o), in reality Wii fans make up the joint largest grouping on these forums (alongside PS3 fans), but I'm sure you already know that.

Going by polls on the site, anything pro-PS3 or anti-Wii get the most votes. So either the Nintendo fans are either not paying attention to the polls, or there's mostly PS3 fans on the site.

@OP - More than likely, or at best, dismissed as another Wii periphreal

I am a game dev, and I won't say I hate the Natal concept, Im more confused in the target market for this. Nintendo has the casual market locked down, so it can't be them. That leaves the core gamers on the 360, their existing userbase.

That said, I'm trying to figure out how you will crawl through a tunnel, climb a ladder, chase someone down through tunnels. I can't think MS really believes that they can lure the casual market away from Nintendo with this technology, as the Wii has become a household name among casuals and pop media. So, we need more info in how it will be viable for the market common to the 360 - the core FPS/action gamer.

i think Natal is very limited, and if was announced by Nintendo most people would see it as another family game/concept

i don't understand how Natal possibilities are endless, what exactly can you play with it!?
ok, there are some great things like on-rails shooter with fighting elements would rule : P a swordplay, a fitness game, sports games and party games

sports games like running won't be favored by Natal, so Wii has sports as well, fitness is ok i guess i a bit favored by Natal, a swordplay game is just limited to sword or karate, nothing more, you can't even walk, it will be cool but will get boring pretty fast

what are the other possibilities, it does not even have one button, do you realize what that means, you can't do a lot of things, not even move character

let's think of the best games, Halo could work with Natal, how?
a fighter like street fighter or ssbb would work? Mario Kart, how are going to throw shells and stuff, Mario Galaxy, Assasin's Creed, any RPG?? i think it's very limited for gamers at least

i see that Natal is great, but i cannot understand why most core-gamers like it, from the point they hated Wii remote and WM+ i don't see how you can be impressed by this when is mostly sports and party games (which is what MS wants, casuals), and this is why you hate Wii, , and now you support this because it's not Nintendo.... : (

Wow, really? When did I ever say I hated the Wii? Did I not say that I thought their Wiimote was innovative and cool when it first came out? Did I not say that if MS created the Wiimote+ I would be very unimpressed. Did I not also say that if Nintendo came out with NATAL I would have been just as impressed with it? You sir, owe me an apology. I do not hate the Wii, It just isn't my cup of tea. Just because you hate anything MS (and it shows greatly) Does not mean that anybody who does not own your precious console is automatically a hater. Try reading my damn posts, I have answered EVERY SINGLE QUESTIOn you have asked. But since you seem unable to fully comprehend what you see on your screen. Let me reiterate. (read it slowly and let it sink in before you decide to post more bullshit)

Buttons: you don't need buttons. If you want to jump in the game, just jump in real life, you wanna reload, make the motion that you are reloading your weapon in real life, you wanna change weapons, just tell NATAL which weapon you want.

MS has said that they plan to make Halo and COD playable on NATAL.

You obviously cannot comprehend how NATAL can and will work with games of all types, therefore, I expect I will have to post all this a third time, just like I had to do in the two other threads. You people can be dense sometimes. Now, NEVER, EVER, EVER, accuse me of hating a console again, do you understand?

Playing an FPS and other action games without controller would make playing very tiresome. If you would have jump every time your character or run in place if you want to move then most people couldn't play game more than 5-10 minutes at a time. Playing even 1 hour at a time would require extremely good fitness. In some platformers you would have to jump almost constantly so those games would simply not work very well with Natal alone. And fighting games would be very difficult (if not impossible) if you would have to do every move physically. Even if Natal would be very sensitive it would still be tiresome to play these games with it. In combination with controller Natal would work well with FPS and some other games but not alone. Well, unless you want to exercise every time you play games.

Constantly shouting commands doesn't sound very good either. Voice recognition has its problems and it doesn't always recognise commands. There is no voice recognition which would always recognise what you say. And voice recognition doesn't work very well in many languages. Voice recognition is good for english-speaking persons but in most other languages voice recognition it is just terrible. My native language is not english so I wouldn't want voice recognition because most games are not even translated here.

And with Natal there is also an issue with limited space. Most living rooms have only limited space so it would difficult to use.

Then again, perhaps upcoming games prove me wrong. There is still a possibility that MS knows how to make even action games to work with Natal. Nobody has used Natal so we can't know how it works in reality. And without good games Natal would be worthless anyway.

what Untamoi says sounds very logical to me, and those reasons are why i believe WM+ has a brighter future

of course there's still a chance MS can make action games work great, but with what they've shown up to now, it seems a bit impossible

a nunckuk with 4 buttons and stick to move character would make Natal perfect, but MS focused a lot on the "you are the controller" that limits what is possible with that project, that's why they added voice/face recognition

to me, and from what MS has shown Natal is clearly casual, and i don't think MS could develop that thing to focus again on core gamers, where the only way to beat Wii is casuals, and since they say Xbox360 until 2015 it's logical that Natal's main target are Wii casuals are casuals who haven't got any console yet!?
