Forums - Nintendo - E3: Wii HD (Iwata speaks)

Buzzi said:
Iwata is wright, why having Wii HD now? They can go on for a lot of time with this console, they can do like DSi: giving more life to Wii with a HD console, but just in 2-3 years, just to have good sales for other time and start developing the real Wii 2.

DSi =/= Wii HD...

1st:

DS & DSi = Handheld

Wii & Wii-HD = Consoles

2nd:

Changes in DSi doesn't separate the gaming demographic between it and the original. Developers still sell "DS games", and people that own a DSi can play them "fully". We can't talk about something as "backwards compability" unless we stretch it a little.

Changes in "Wii-HD" would separate the gaming demographic between it and the original. Developers would sell "wii games" or "Wii-HD games", players can't exchange between both easily: they can't play "mismatched" software/hardware "fully". "Backwards compability" is an issue.

With this said, Wii>Wii-HD isn't the same as DS>DSi, but is much closer to PS>PS2>PS3.

it would be cool if they made an hd wii. I might buy it if they made one. They'd have to make it so it upconverts games to hd.

Chicken wings are best with buffalo sauce. If you haven't tried that you haven't lived! It's a proven fact, well, not really.

There won't be a Wii HD. There will just be Nintendo's next system with HD capabilities.

if they made a wii hd console i think i would feel cheated because i would hate to have to buy an new one....which i would not do unless mine broke

I remmber Nitnendo saying a while back that one of the reasons they aren't pricecutting is that they don't want to cheat the customers who hae already bought one.

I remember with the Gamecube, I bought it near it's release at $345 CAD(with tax) with no bundle then a bit over a year later it was around $230, plus bundled with one of four games of your choice.  I was pretty pissed as I felt I was gyped.

Now they can afford to NOT drop the price... Sony can't, right? It's the same idea. Now... Microsoft is just crazy with price. That's who Nintendo was poking when said it (I believe).

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

People overrate HD. It's an arbitrary number. It's not like there's a set resolution where our eyes are like "oh, SHIT!! Now that's high definition!". It's nice, I guess, but I honestly don't give a damn about HD and, being the largely ascetic guy I am, probably never will.

I agree that it's greatly overrated in gaming, but - just for information - there actually is a critical resolution based on the biology of human eyes.

Depending on how good your sight is, the size of the screen and the distance from which you're looking at the image, it would be the resolution so high that pixels are of the same size of the human eye's angular resolution (about 1'). Any higher resolution would be pratically useless because your eye would see neighbouring pixels as a single dot.

For a 42 inches screen watched from 2.5 meters this limit is slightly higher than 720p - unless I botched my calculations :) Bigger screen or closer distance, and the limit is higher.

If your sight is not 20/20, it's probably lower :)

@ringo

I do agree about considering the whole presentation. For example I value animations so much that I cringe at the screenshot frenzy of some people.

Just one remark though, it's not like a piece of art has to be pleasant or beautiful in a strict sense... its goal could be exactly to transmit desperation, depression, even madness (I loved Shadowman, back in the days)

I think I was dimly/intuitively aware of this, but not the specifics. Interesting to read, thanks for that.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

Iwata is right, Wii owners wouldn't get anything meaningful out of an increased resolution. The Wii has sold well because it has filled new values and if people really want increased resolution then they can buy one of the two competing consoles. The next Nintendo console will have HD resolution but right now we can focus on the new experiences that didn't seem possible 4 years ago
