ouch. that will be a sad day for the sony fanboys. $90 game on a console with a 50 million user base outsells a $500 console.

Fixed

You can dress that up however you want, it still hasn't happened to any major console since... uh.

When the Hell was the last time it happened? Super Mario Bros. outselling the Master System?

Has it ever happened for non-bundled software? (consoles, not handhelds)

Well... there were a few PS2 games that outsold the Dreamcast.

Kind of depends which consoles you include really, I mean there were games that outsold the Saturn on both N64 and PS1.... or you could include the Jaguar, the Amiga and the 3DO in that generation too.

Not nice of you to put PS3 in the same bracket with consoles that died prematurely.

Like I said before LTD its never going to happen.

Maybe might surpass it but the PS3 will just surpass it and be ahead again after a price cut.

It will pass it LTD (life-to-date) whenever it happens. Total lifetime sales might be another matter. Just hope Nintendo doesn't start releasing figures for the Balance Board, or the PS3 may never catch up.

I think Wii Fit will pass the PS3. But, eventually, the PS3 will probably over take it, but who knows.

As for just the Balance Board (this includes Wii Fit Plus bundled with the board too) I think it will probably stay above the PS3.

As expected from O... I mean, Pineapple.

You say that the Wii Fit dropoffs are the result of the industry slowing down. I think that is partly the case, but I would also guess that Wii Fit is slowing down on its own. Back in the days of release, only the limited supply held the sales below 200k a week.

I buy most of your predictions, but I still think that by the end of the year Wii Fit will sell at best on par with the PS3. (GAH! I just had a flashback from when I said exactly the same before the america release...)

May: (Note: The others are 4.25 weeks each, whereas May is only 3 weeks)

That is not true... the monthly charts (and yearly) just combine the weekly charts together, they do not split weeks up because the data only comes per week, not per day.

So some of those months will be 4 weeks, and some 5 weeks (except May, which is incomplete of course).... it tells you the dates the data is relavant for on the monthly charts.

The first 4 months are on average 4.25 weeks (17/4). I think everyone here knows that each month is not split up by days (it even says so on the monthly page).

It was merely pointing out that the drop wasn't as large as it seems, and I believed saying 4.25 weeks was more accurate than 4.0, even though neither is correct.

As for Khuutra, no game has ever, at the end of the gen, outsold one of its main competitor's hardware sales (the main competitors are, none of 3rd gen, 1 for 4th and 5th gen, and 2 for 6th gen), and I very much doubt that any game (other than Wii Sports, and possibly Wii Play) will this gen.

You could argue what is a major competitor though.

It already makes more business sense to make a game for the balance board than the PS3. There's less competition, cheaper development costs, and the higher userbase is just around the corner. And there were several new balance board games playable at E3.

Here are the ones I played:
Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympics
We Cheer 2
The new DDR
Shaun White Snowboarding World Stage

I saw these around too:
EA Active
All Star Cheer Squad
Wii Fit +

I know it doesn't address the price aspect, but I thought it worth mentioning that no game on the PS2 outsold the GC.

A game outselling a console?

You're quite the stealthy rouge arent you.

Actually, I am discussing a platform outselling a platform.

@Seraphic_Sixaxis: two Wii games have already outsold the PS3, those being Wii Sports and Wii Play.

@steven787: to compare a platform to a platform you need to compare the balance board (+Wii, because the balance board alone dosn't do anything) to the PS3 - not Wii Fit to the PS3 (Wii Fit is software).

So will Wii Fit (the software) outsell the PS3, I think yes: for a window of probably less than 6 months late this year/early next year, then the slowing sales of Wii Fit due to age and it's sequel will allow the PS3 to catch up and surpass Wii Fit in sales.

But the more important fact is with the launch of Wii Fit+ and it being bundled with the Balance Board (while also available separately) the Balance Board is almost assuredly going to surpass the PS3 in total sales and may be able to keep that lead until very late in this generation (and might even win out fully in the end).

I think Nintendo looks at the Wii + Balance Board as their higher up SKU (like the 360 Elite or the Higher capacity PS3 when they have more than one avalilable) the only difference is that Nintendo doesn't force the Wii into different SKUs, you buy the base and you can expand on it how you wish.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

But was the Dreamcast really a major competitor? It dissapeared so quickly, so I'd say it, like the Saturn and Master System, wasn't a major competitor.

I love this guy! he's a genius :)

and yes, WiiFit is software which will soon (when WiiFit+ comes) start to go down in sales but i think he balance board is an actual platform and it will pass PS3 sales, and maybe even XBOX360 sales lol, that'd be so funny :)

there's EA Sports Active which is bundled with the balance board, it had a nice opening week and i predict more to come so that should count too in terms of sales for the balance board, it'll pass PS3 and X360 sales sooner than you think!

Nintendo should sell the balance board alone, my friend had to buy WiiFit just to play Shawn White Snowboarding :(
