I ignore Wii games WITH sloppy controls.

Yeah pretty much DonWii. I mean there is no denying there are Wii games with crappy controls, but there are games on every system with crappy controls. There are just more on the Wii in it's early life. The odd thing is the way the article says it it's like every Wii game has bad controls... but that's not true. RE4 and MP3 actually improved on the regular control schemes. Godfather Blackhand, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Twilight Princess, Strikers Charged, Super Paper Mario, and others were all more than competent. The Wii games that people actually like all have very good controls, so I don't really see the relevance of his statement. It's like me saying "Some games suck." Thanks for the update Captain Obvious (not you Legend, I meant Perry).

However, I would say that due to the nature of the Wii's controls that it is easier to notice bad controls versus a more traditional setup. And while I think this is bad in the short run (more crappy games), I think it will weed out some of the shovelware since developing a good control scheme cannot be done without effort at this time aka it's easier to see developers that don't put forth adequate effort.

Yeah, it's a Logic Phail Perry is going through:

A: Some games have bad control
B: The Wii has controls
C: Lots of people like the Wii

Therefore

D: All fans ignore bad Wii controls because it's on the Wii

Huh?

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

It can have 1:1 if they wanted.

No it can't.  You do realize it's pretty much impossible to recreate 1:1 motion, right?  They could get really close if they can predict what kind of movements you're making, like holding a baseball bat behind your head, etc, but you can't swing wildly and expect any developer to determine where the Wiimote is.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Very true.  Some people haven't realized this yet though and still hope for 1:1 swordplay, but it just can't happen.

You're both (sort of) correct ...

The Wiimote is generally accurate enough to handle 1 to 1 movement but there are two problems:

  1. The Wii determines which way is "up" through the influence of gravity on the sensors; if you are flailing the Wiimote around too much it can cause problems with the Wii knowing where the Wiimote is and its orientation.
  2. Most Wii inputs are still 'gestures' and you must complete the 'gesture' before the Wii knows what you're doing. In many games (like tennis, baseball, and boxing) the gesture is a smooth motion in a particular direction for a certain period of time; the lag you notice is (typically) gesture lag between when you think of performing a gesture and actually complete it. Edit: This is why it is often easier to play (and more lag free) if you make larger gestures; your mind naturally adjusts the desired action to the end of the gesture which (with longer gestures) can compensate for the lag.

If you're playing a "1:1" lightsaber game, and you swing downwards, but also unknowingly take a couple steps back...is your character also going to step backwards? No, because movement will be controlled with the analog stick most likely.

So with "1:1" motion, your lightsaber just swung down and back somehow...not what you meant to do.

I don't know if that explained it, but basically, your body will be moving as well as your Wiimote...it's impossible to take your body and the Wiimote into account with perfect accuracy...there's going to be some weird sword motions going on that you did not mean to do.

Besides, 1:1 can't be that great anyway.

I mean, yes, I would love to see my motions perfectly replicated onscreen.

But how does that make for a good game?

If you're playing a 2 player lightsaber dueling game, and there's no "block" button, no "super speed", etc, just swinging 1:1, you and the other player are just going to jab forward, trying to stab the other person in the gut. Defending would be very hard, because you'd have to line it up perfectly to block. You could just flail like crazy and you'd be able to get through.

A game with limited motion, the ability to have blocking, powerups, etc, would make for a much better game experience. Swinging left to right, right to left, up to down, down to up could make for a more enjoyable game.
