It's pretty funny seeing how threatened Nintendo fans are by this.

No, responding to the announcement of something doesn't indicate being threatened by it, there are many MS fans who feel that NATAL is something earthshattering, so of course others will step in to try and give those MS fans a dose of perspective.

A fanboy telling rival fanboys they're following the wrong flag? That makes a lot of sense, he could become as popular as Jesus with the Pharisees!

The problem with development kits being sent out is that third parties generally aren't interested in carrying the burden to drive hardware sales. That's the job of the first party and third parties hop on board. This means Microsoft themselves have to make the first step and showcase games that are able to sell Natal. Which they didn't.

If Microsoft expects that third parties are going to do MS's job to sell the hardware, they are delusional.

I think the success of the Wii's peripherals and those of games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band has changed everything.  Ubisoft is going to release a camera with its execise software, then there's Activision with their skateboard and music periperals.  Then you have EA and their success with EA SPorts Active.  I think you're going to see some third-parties jump on this in the hopes they'll have the next Wii Fit or Wii Sports.

Nope. The peripherals you talk about were all developed by third parties to make their own games for them. It's their product and they try to sell it with their own game. The sales of every peripheral in this industry are and have to be driven by the company who made it. There's no reason for anyone to throw money behind a peripheral that isn't their own, unless of course that peripheral has already become successful and an existing install base.

They already do it everytime a new console is released.

Obviously we can see via the avatar thingy (BAM) that this needs a little more time in the oven, which is why it's coming in 2010, but I do think that A_T has a point, but not really. I'm positive it will get released, but it will be like the HOME Beta where a lot of stuff we saw yesterday is not going to be in there at launch. Virtual Family games probably won't make it, and not Milo if it's really as advanced as it is, since there was a developer from Lionhead pseudo-controlling him while journos tried it out. Paint worked well, as did the crazy ball game with the asian chick. Avatar manipulation will probably happen (but is kinda uselss x_x), and voice and video chat seem easy since MS already has those. I'm kinda skeptical of facial recognition and clothing recognition. I'm sure the camera is capable of that, but I'm not sure the software will be able to take that and make an avatar that looks like you.

So I expect a beta version of the software to be sold with the hardware next year with Paint, the ball game, and the video/voice chat. Everything aside from that seems iffy as the software looks a little chanky as of yesterday.

I thought we were talking about peripherals and excluding standard controllers that come with every console. At least your previous post gave me this impression.

I see the situation as being pretty similar.  I mean look at the N-Gage, it got support from EA, Ubisoft, Sega, Activision, etc.  Does anyone really think that third-parties would be willing to make games for the N-Gage but be adverse to making them for this?  Especially now that it's in the media and they know that it's what Microsoft is going to rely on to capture some of the casual market.

@ Legend

But while the N-Gage got support, all of the games utterly sucked.

Reasonable hypothesis, but: they have to learn the new tool and figure out decent enough games that use it, if they don't want a flop, how long will it take to do this? Will they be ready for XB360 or for XB720?

Due to the PS3 motion controller's announcements, I changed my mind, I think it is more likely that they will both seriously work on their controllers, delay them for a year, and release them in the next generation.

Actually it makes sense that it wont be released, people are saying $200 for the camera, that won't have any market penetration at that price, by the time it gets to a price cheap nough to hit the market, it'll be the next generation.

Wrong... Can't quite remember the link to it, but right now using a certain kind of alloy chip for the camera costs around $60. The article stated that in all likelihood MS will wait at least until next year for the creation of the CMOS chipset for the camera which should place their manufacturing value around $15.

Don't ask for a link, but it was posted on this site. Search it out if you want.

You know, I did a search and the only thing that showed up was your post.
