Forums - Gaming - Does Nintendo get too much credit for saving videogames?

The price would have come down eventually. The question is would demand have stayed the same by then.

I guess, at the core, we don't have an alternate universe where Nintendo stayed a card company. We'll never truly know what Nintendo's impact was on the gaming industry.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

@Ishy

your 15, how can you possibly make a comment like that?

my brothers tell me...and i know a lot of older gamers (30+), who have been playing games since before i was born... also I have heard about how all the US video game market crashed and that all the E.T game copies were buried in a desert because the game was so expensive and so shockingly bad... at this time US consumers had given up on video games but nintendo single handedly revitalized the video game market with the NES...

Why not add me on msn... ish_187@hotmail.co.uk

i liked pachter saying "i don't really get it"... for once, he's right...

Many stores stopped selling videogames and most of the stores that continued to sell games only gave them tiny sections.  This happened because of the collapse.  Nintendo enter the market with lots of controls that ensured higher quality product and was able to encourage the stores to slowly allow more and more videogames.  Nintendo did not save home videogames by itself but did more than any handful of other companies combined.

currently playing: Desktop Tower Defense (PC), Puzzle Quest (DS), Trauma Center New Blood (Wii), Guitar Hero III (Wii), Ghost Squad (Wii), Actraiser (SNES), Donkey Kong County (SNES), The Legend of Zelda (NES), Kirby's Adventure (NES)

I think you are taking the term "saved" too literally. Obviously video gaming wouldn't have died but it wouldn't be where it is right now think of saved as in more of the sense of they stopped the videogame industry from choking itself for 5-6 years. I mean I love pc gaming too but seriously its not as important as us pc gamers like to think it is. Thanks to its gotta upgrade cycle of every 2 years it really puts off a lot of average people I've even gotten sick of it by now and will probably only be buying Blizzard pc games from now on since they seem to be the only company aware of the fact that this cycle is choking the industry to death. It amazes me that 300 dollar graphics cards are supposed to be the norm and now some even want to push us to buy physics cards and other such nonsense for another 300 dollars hah to that. Even now in Japan Nintendo was responsible for a large rebirth on an industry that was shrinking even Sony execs have been noted in the last few years to say that we owe Nintendo for revival of an industry that was starting to see a crash simliar to what happened in NA back in the 80's. Yea gaming would definitely still be around without Nintendo but it'd probably not be as big the same with Sony sweeping in during the 90's and bringing a ton of new gamers in with the Playstation. I'd guess Nintendo just gets so much credit for it though because they tend to step in during times of massive shrinking of the industry in whatever market is having the troubles.

Now Playing : Links Crossbow Training(Wii), Super Mario Galaxy(Wii) FE: Path of Radiance(GC)

Sony should get the credit not nintendo, they freakin rejected them when they wanted to make the SNES a better system. Now because they made the NES everyone thinks they are best. Childs play really..

There were still large displays for computer games in some stores.

I think most of the growth from 1985-1995 can be attributed to Nintendo. While there WERE very good computer games, the MASS market (where most of the money is) grew mostly because of the NES and SNES. The mass market also grew because of Sega, but less so.

Most of the Mass Market growth from 1995-2005 can be attributed to Sony, and now it looks like it is back to Nintendo (2006-2007).
I don't really think you can say any one company "saved" gaming but certainly Nintendo was responsible for most of the profits and growth from 1985-1995.

Yes they get way too much credit for the saving videogaming thing, for a start give some credit to SEGA, and Commodore and more.They did save videogaming BUT NOT Worldwide only in Japan where it was never that big but look at it now there its MASSIVE.
