On which device would you like to see UMD?
It's Sony's format for the PSP, they wanted to push the PSP as a multimedia device and IMO it's impressive they were able to attract so much 3rd party movie support for what is essentially just a mini-DVD format (like a mini-CD was a smaller Compact Disc) with some new compression methods not specifically useful to just UMD.
It's not like a lot of R&D went into developing UMD like was the case for Blu-Ray. Sony made it clear UMD was in no way intended to rival DVD. It's a format to store PSP games and movies on. Only a fairly ordinary DVD movie infrastructure is needed to support the format.
I guess you had very different expectations for the format than I myself had (Sony was more successful than I expected them to be). I only viewed UMD as a PSP games format, like the Wii uses custom DVDs, but unlike the Wii is supported with the movie content option.
Its not a failure, its simply being replaced with a smaller, more advanced, easier system of storage.

UMD is just the media that holds PSP games, nothing more. It's no different that the DS cartridge.

Doesn't it also hold movies?
They have already said they are keeping both models on the market but I'm sure slowly the PSP3000 will be phased out.
By the way Nice Home Alone Avatar!!!

I dont believe it was a failure all together but because the way they were made, the long times and not even commercialy available (which wouldn't have been good either way) made it a faliure. But since it was the only medium for the programing PSP games on, they Dev had no choice. But now with the PSP Go it will probably be a thing if a past.

Yes, it can hold movies as well. It's essentially just a mini-DVD. I'm sure the DS cartridge can probably hold movies too if Nintendo choose to, but one movie probably won't fit on one DS cartridge.
It is a flop, it havent been used by any other device then PSP, Studios have dropped it as well.
