On which device would you like to see UMD?
It's Sony's format for the PSP, they wanted to push the PSP as a multimedia device and IMO it's impressive they were able to attract so much 3rd party movie support for what is essentially just a mini-DVD format (like a mini-CD was a smaller Compact Disc) with some new compression methods not specifically useful to just UMD.
It's not like a lot of R&D went into developing UMD like was the case for Blu-Ray. Sony made it clear UMD was in no way intended to rival DVD. It's a format to store PSP games and movies on. Only a fairly ordinary DVD movie infrastructure is needed to support the format.
I guess you had very different expectations for the format than I myself had (Sony was more successful than I expected them to be). I only viewed UMD as a PSP games format, like the Wii uses custom DVDs, but unlike the Wii is supported with the movie content option.
