Gamespot has the push of Cnet behind it, they have Metacritic, Gamerankings, and GameFAQs, it's more that Gamespot has a bigger spread of sites and many link all back to Gamespot while IGN is pretty concentrated.  So more people that go to a site for gaming news?  Probably IGN.  People that look for other things about gaming usually get linked to Gamespot and it becomes number 1.

@site popularity list....

I some how highly doubt Gamespot is more popular then IGN. Gamespot is so.......blah. I can spend all day surfing IGN no problem.......well at least that was before they went into this gawd awful beta template look. I HATE IT. Still, IGN has a much larger database of games new and old, MOvies, TV Shows, etc. They just seem bigger as a whole to me then Gamespot and GS just is lacking in content.

What I find strangest is Gamer's Hell ranking. I've never heard of them.

You must forgive people on this site for not being able to discern sarcasm. We read some pretty stupid shit on a daily basis, and we have learned to assume that someone is an idiot until proven otherwise.

Reviewers do not hand out scores like that for laughs. No matter what you think of a mainstream reviewer a rating like that should give you pause, because even on a curve the game is not even making average. That is a pretty damning indictment, and mainstream reviewers are never that far off the track.

I can just about guarantee you with a score like that the reviewers had a consultation, because nobody wants to lay that kind of smack down with out feeling thoroughly justified in doing so. That means two or three other people had to fully support the position that this game is indeed crap.

OT: It's probably about right, I'm honestly not sure if I'll even be able to get myself to finish the game before I just break down and write the review. Which would make it the first game I've reviewed without beating.
