If a consoles loss bleeds the manufacturer dry, but gets great games, how does that help fans of the console? The PS3 is no Dreamcast, however, the Dreamcast lost much less than PS3 and caused Sega to leave the console business. That then hurt third parties who were making games for the console.

There may be good games coming for you, but if Sony continues to lose big (and their current sales numbers are not very impressive), what will their incentive be to keep at this? When Nintendo had the 3rd place selling console, they were still making more money than 1st place Sony. Third parties did make more on the PS2. But Sony made less than Nintendo even when they won the generation.

Can even you call that good/smart business?

PS3 at 7 cores, blu-ray, tons of 3rd party support, online, HD and others after 2,5 years is ahead of GC (no 3rd party support, weak Nintendo at the time, limited disk size, launched a year after PS2) and xbox (first entry in business, lousy 3rd party support at start, very high price at start, no 1st party support, launched a year after PS2) by 8 mln.

PS3 is also ahead of x360 by 3,5 mln., which cost $279 for X360 Arcade and $349 for 20GB Premium on it`s 3rd year by that time (at a time when the competition was at its peak, RRoD was in a rampage, HD format war ended in favor of PS3, Wii sales exploded, ect)

People were saying that a half year after the PS3 release...They said that after 1 year, after 1,5 year...After 2 years....And are still saying that still Sony is announcing more and more games and is getting still 3d party exclusives.....At a point you don't believe the 'we want Sony to leave the console business' freaks anymore :).

Hm. What does your sentence tell you? The GC made Ninty more money than PS2 made Sony. Nintendo packed the Wii with a game at $249, and Sony released a console at 500/600 at the same time.

The only factor I see is that Sony has lousy business sense and it has caused them to bleed profusely........ The console may have great games, but Sony has stockholders that need to see better than this. And THEY don't care about PS3/GC/XBox aligned launches. But they do care about and WILL control the future of Sony's gaming business if things don't change....

And I don't want them to leave the console business, I just want them to operate smarter. It does no one any good when a console with the quality of games the PS3 has loses an immense amount of money.

The question you have to ask yourself crazzy is how in the world is the PS3 not mopping the floor with the 360. It's the succesor to the most succesful console of all time, came out just as RROD was becoming a massive problem, is the only next-gen console to have bluray and has some of the biggest exclusive franchises behind it like MGS4 and GT5. Yet despite all this the gap between the PS3 and the 360 has increased an extra 3 million since launch. That if nothing else should show you how insignificant a price cut will be in the grand scheme of things.

@Crazzy... but supposedly when PS3 owners are not using it to their advantage, Wii Sports is merely a tech demo (despite having more gameplay content then most full price games)

Also the Wii is doing better than the PS2 without having had a PRICE CUT!!! =)

It is a false assumption.... the PS2 has certainly made more profit than the GC did.... The confusion lies in that Nintendo made more profit in the PS2 years (2000 - 2006) than Sony's game division did. It is difficult to split apart the GC and GBA/DS sections of Nintendo without properly readin the reports, which I can't be bothered with. But I would guess the PS2 made something in the region of 2-3 times the profit that the GC did.

Still. 2-3 times is nothing compared to the huge disparity in hardware and more importantly, software sales.

It's been well documented both on this board and NeoGaf. There are multiple threads on both boards with yearly financial statements laid out side by side for all 3 companies from NES Era, to Sony's entry in the industry, to MS. A few of them have Sega's numbers in there as well, even though they are no longer in the console business, at least for now. I don't remember if PSX or n64 made more, but if find any of those threads, the numbers are there and factual, as the come direct from each companies financial statements. Please do look at the numbers, it's definitely eye opening.
