The new look is a mixed bag for me. It's visually stunning, while impossible to view on my iPod Touch (which I use to surf the site quite often)... I'm hoping the css/Javascript change improves this. Also great to hear that the bandwidth/processor requirements should be less. Many people are moving to mobile platforms (it appears to be a solid trend), so I'm glad this is being considered.
The front page is *very* densely populated... perhaps once I'm used to it I won't have as much trouble finding content.
Regarding 1280 width displays... this is largely true. However, having a 1280 pixel-wide display and setting one's browser window to that width are two different issues. I run at 1280x1024 on my home system, but I tend to keep my browser window at less width so that I can conveniently reach some of my commonly used desktop icons. Most Mac and PC users I know do this.
